What to do in Luton

by stfan Online Now Oct 15, 2004 at 3:01 AM

Hi guys, its me again. Well my plan is ready and I guess I will stay in Luton for about a day. I will arrive probably at 16:00 (4 pm?) and leave the next day at 10 am. So, what to do? I dont have time to see any museums but what about some sights? Is it anything special to see, what do you recommand? And how big is this city, can I go everywhere on foot? Thanks guys! Stefan

Why will you be in luton? If you are in between flights, by far the best thing to do is get the train straight from the airport into london for the evening. Time spent in luton is just time wasted; it's not a city, just a fairly miserable town and there is nothing to see there. But if you absolutely have to stay, the only thing I could suggest is to find a friendly pub - the Good Pub Guide recommends the Bricklayer's Arms near the train station in High Town Road, but NOT any other pubs in that area - and hope there's a pub quiz or a good football match on TV so you get a taste of English pub life.

Hmm - there's a Cineworld multiplex next to the Arndale centre - cineworld.co.uk/cinemas/luto... Can't think of any sights - unless you count the airport... Good luck! - Jeremy

Hi - the train to London should take about 30-40 minutes. There is a free shuttle from the airport to "Luton Airport Parkway" station. You can find timetables on this page - click on the links marked Bedford to St. Pancras: thameslink.co.uk/plan_your_j... Cheers, Jeremy

get the transit bus to Luton Parkway train station, it only takes about 30-40 mins and its a direct service. That takes you into St. Pancras station. The immediate area isnt the best but you can get the tube to most places after that, depends what you would want to do.

Thanks guys. Well, I have decided to just visit the Brent Cross shopping mall instead of going into london. I have been there before, dont get me wrong I REALLY want to go back but if I only have like 4 hours its not enough, so I will just visit that shopping mall and do some shopping. Anyone been there? If so, anything interesting? Thank you again so much! I really appreciate all the help you are giving me :) - Stefan

I shop at Brent Cross sometimes. It has a Marks & Spencer, Fenwick and John lewis department stores, which are all quite good. Then it's mostly high street shops - WH Smith, Topshop, Gap etc. There's a top layer of cafes and restaurants, including a US style diner and salt-beef sandwich cafe. I wouldn't say it's my favourite place to visit but you could definitely kill a few hours there. I think the website is www.brentcross-london.co.uk if you want to check opening hours etc.

The other possibility is that you are only two train stops from St Albans, which is an old Roman town with a lot of good pubs - though by the time you get there maybe the museum, roman theatre, cathedral etc might be shut. Maybe someone else can advise if it's worth going.

Unlike Brent Cross, the Arndale is only open until 6: lutonarndale.co.uk/pages/tim... Brent Cross is open until 8, and the Green Line bus takes you there: londontoolkit.com/travel/lut... Cheers, Jeremy

Yeah I was just checking out their website and I saw their opening times. Shocking! But I think its better for me to stay in Luton though. But which do you think is better place, Arndale or Brents Cross? I mean I am an 18 year old guy just wanting to shop for some nice clothes... oh and by the way how are the prices in these shopping mall? Is it expensive or cheap? Thanks :) Stefan

I went to St Alban's for a day trip from London about a month back, and certainly thought it worthwhile. FAR preferable to Brent Cross! As well as the places mentioned above, there are also the remains of a Roman amphitheatre, the only one to survive in this country.
