We will be staying in an apartment in Lucca for a week this July, and we would like to visit Siena for a night and perhaps see some of the small towns near Siena during our trip (for example, we have never been to Montepulciano). Since we are flying into Rome for our holiday, we could drive from Rome or Orvieto up to Lucca and visit Siena and the area along the way. Does this sound like an enjoyable trip or would it be best to go from Rome to Lucca by train? If we go from Rome to Lucca by train, what would be the best way to visit Siena and environs from Lucca? Would it be best to rent a car for a few days, or should we take a bus or train?
