Siem reap to Luang Prabang

by roster26 Online Now May 23, 2012 at 7:24 PM

We're going to Siem Reap and onto Laos in October and want to know the best way to get from SR to either Pakse or Luang Prabang. Airfares are expensive so are there any alternate methods that aren't too time consuming or uncomfortable?

You will either hve to take your time or fly there. From Siem Reap you will need to travel towards Phnom Penh and then make a left turn north along the Mekong River and travel past Kratie to the lao border. The border crossing is open an easy to cross. But expect at least 2 full days of travelling between Siem Reap and Pakse sn rxprct that it could end up taking 3-4 days as the roads in northern Cambodia are sometimes in a bad state if the weather goes crazy, cause many of the roads are not paved.

I don't know if it is the only way but it's certainly cheap. Bus from Siem Reap to Bangkok maybe around10 3rd class train overnight from Bangkok to Nong Khai 250 baht, more for 2nd class or sleeper. Or bus from BKK to Vientiane. Cross the bridge to Vientiane then bus to L Prabang, can't remember what we paid but i think20 may cover it. Of course if you go overland you get to see the country, but you can get to BKK from Siem Reap in one day (leave early) then there are 3 trains each night going to Nong Khai (around 7 or 8 pm ). spend a night in Vientaine then get early bus next morning to LP.

I flew Luang Prabang to Pakse with Lao Airlines, I couldn't put up with any more long cramped buses. The same airlines flies onwards to Siam Reap. The most convenient overland route I'd say is crossing into Northern Thailand and taking the overnight train or bus to Bangkok then the bus to SIam Reap. You could do the slow boat to Houay Xia and enter Thailand at Chiang Khong, that's my advice, just be prepared to fall in love with the North Thai culture
