Boat trip from Lua Prabang to Muang Khong

We are planning to visit Laos in February 2004. For travelling form north to south we would like to to use a river boat. Does anybody know if it is possible to rent a houseboat on the Mekong river with coocing facilities and accomodation similar to those crusing on backwaters in South India? lf yes, are they allowed to cross borders between Laos and Thailand? Does anybody know a company offering such services? Every hint would be highly appreciated.
