    • What to wear?

      Chamonix-Mont-Blanc 1 hours ago

We will be in Chamonix in early June and plan to hike Lac Blanc and also take the Aiguille du Midi cable car. Can anyone tell us what we will need to wear? We were thinking--hiking boots, fleece, down vest and a shell jacket, gloves and a hat. We are worried that will not be warm enough. Should we bring winter jackets? Thanks

    • camping nr Vernon and train to Paris

      France May 20, 2013 at 3:10 PM

We want to stay for a few nights at a camp site nr Vernon or Evreux , leave the car at the camp site and travel into Paris on the train and stay overnight. Can anyone recommend a good camp site with easy access to a station. We need to be happy that the car and caravan will be secure if we are leaving them unattended for the night. We have looked at Les Andelys but not sure how easy it would be to get too and from the station without the car. Any advice gratefully received.

      Hi All,
I have never been to France, a friend is recommending Brittany for our first time. We intend on using the ferry to cross from Dover to Calais, we will be driving.
I have spent around 6 hours this week trying to work out a rout that will show us some interesting sights/places/towns/beaches, but oh my words! I am more confused than when I started, can anyone recommend a rout or a book that has routs in France to follow.

      GR20

      Corsica May 17, 2013 at 3:44 PM

      Hello!
Id like to walk the famous gr20 track but I probably wont be able to spend 15 days for walking so I have to decide which part of it to take, northen or southen. I was thinking of walking the northen part from Calenzana to Vizzavona.
      1. Has anyone taken it? How was it? Difficoulty in a scale from 1 to 10 where 1 is a walk on a beach and 10 is the hardest track one can imagine?
      2. How many refuges were there? Can you camp on the track?
      3. What about food? Is it best to take lyophilisated food or can you buy some food in small villages on the track
      4. Im planning to go there in september, is it a good time?
      5. How to get there the cheapest way? Plane/ferry/car/train? (excluding hitchhiking)
      Thanks for your help! :)

    • Landrefang (or Laudrefang?)

      Metz Apr 5, 2013 at 11:06 AM

Research for my great-grandfather lead me to a site where a handwritten note said he was born in Landrefang. I googled this term and can't find anything but a street named that in St Avold, plus a mention of this town in a US Military record from World War I. I do see a Laudrefang near St. Avold, though, on my large-scale map of France

Does anyone know if Landrefang and Laudrefang are the same place, or if not, where Landrefang might be?

      Verdun-sur-Meuse Sep 26, 2010 at 7:47 PM

I am visiting the Verdun area in Nov 2010. I want to get to a small village called Chatel Chehery, about 30 miles to the northwest of Verdun. Besides renting a car, are there any other options? Is taxi feasible? Any local buses? Is hitchhiking from Verdun safe? (I can only drive an automatic transmission, so stick shift is out. I know renting a car would be the best, but I've never driven outside the U.S., so I am not particularly eager to try, except if there is no other good option) Is there anyone who lives in Verdun or Sainte Menehould who would be willing to give me a lift (I'd be happy to pay, of course)? • finding an appartment in Metz

      Metz Aug 26, 2006 at 11:58 AM

Hello, I am starting a teaching job in the Metz suburbs in October and will be living there until May. I think the custom for finding an apartment in France is to pay a bunch of money to an agence and get a list of appartments, then pay 2 months rent security deposit, etc. Is this what everyone does, including students? I'm American and I'm used to not having to find an agency, just going out and picking up rental guides for free. How do most students in town end up finding apartments and such? Is there any areas or districts of Metz that are better/worse than others for safety/crime? Anyone have any good apartment leads? Thanks!

      Sarrebourg Dec 8, 2005 at 11:21 PM

Can anyone living there or visiting, call into the Brisbane shop and say "Bonjour" from me, Paul (the man in the hat)from Brisbane, to the nice, tres bon, Manager lady to whom I spoke when I visited last year 2004. I'm from Brisbane, here in Australia, so I thought it odd that I should happen upon such a shopname there in the wilds of France. I had just succumbed to a cold that I picked up on cold night in Nancy and wasn't feeling the best, when I walked up the Grand Rue when a mucica festival was occurring and there it was, The Brisbane Shop. It bought a smile to my face and I felt good to be here in Sarrebourg. I'm sure that the french people have forgiven me for my driving as I had an "Kangaroo" and "Bonjour" sign in the car's back window and I waved my hands a lot. The school children in the back street where I parked the car even knew that I was from Australia, which was welcoming. Thank you to the people of Sarrebourg and to the lady in the Brisbane Shop. Is there a place not far away called Zorrange? - near a big lake - I took photos of some horses there but forgot to write the location. Anyone from Sarrebourg can write me. Thanks. Paul from Brisbane, Australia
