    • Crossing the border in Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls Nov 16, 2015 at 5:28 AM

I'm a Brazilian guy married to an American Citizen. We have three daughters, all of them have American citizenship. We're going to visit Niagara Falls in December. I know that my wife and my kids can cross the border. Is it possible to get a visa in Buiffalo? How long will it take to get the visa there?

New York City Nov 22, 2015 at 11:20 AM

Hi New Yorkers. I would be grateful for your help.
I will be arriving in New York on 21st December in the afternoon and leaving on the evening of the 28th.
I will require a single trip from Jamaica into Manhattan on the E train to get to my hotel and then I want an 7 day card that I will use from the 22nd until my departure on the 28th.
My question is, can I just take my single trip card and get it loaded at a booth for 7 days on the 22nd or is the 7 day card a different type? Many thanks. Roy.

New York City Nov 8, 2015 at 8:51 AM

Hi. My wife and I fly out to New York on the 27th December and back to the UK on the 2nd January. We have our itinerary pretty well sorted but are struggling with what to do on NYE. We are staying on East 50th Street. My wife isn't a fan of fireworks so probably wouldn't enjoy Central Park and we do not want to spend a whole day standing in Times Square. We are young at heart mid 50's non-clubbing types and would like to go somewhere for a nice meal with possibly live music.Any suggestions would be very welcome. Thank you.

New York City Nov 1, 2015 at 4:03 AM

Having been there before I'm now taking my two daughters to New York city staying in Washington heights.
I'm looking for suggestions outside the big touristy attractions to do with them and also the best places to eat. We are going in February as the kids want to go ice skating and the cold doesn't bother with us travelling from Scotland. We will be using the subway as this is how I travelled before and can't fault it.

      Thank you in advance,

      Apartment rather than hotel

Hi son is visiting New York for 5nghts in July16. The hotels are expensive & small rooms, so I wanted to ask members if he would get better value if he could find apartment in central location. His budget is circa $100per night. Any thoughts?.?

    • New York / Washington

New York City Oct 27, 2015 at 10:16 AM

My wife and myself are intending to take my daughter to New York next year for her 21st (her best friend would also like to accompany us). Because of university she can’t go before the beginning of July and because of the heat we have decided on late August or early September. However both my daughter and myself would also like to visit Washington and so I have some questions I would be grateful advice on.

      1. We had thought of flying to Washington for 3 / 4 days, then going by train to NY for 3 / 4 days and then flying home to Dublin. However this is getting expensive and friends who have been, say it would be better to base ourselves in NY and take a day trip to Washington – is this feasible or even worthwhile?

      2. Part of the reason for the expense is that we require two rooms/bedrooms. I then thought it would be better to rent an apartment which would offer greater flexibility, but this is more difficult with a two-centre stay and I’ve heard that the Governor of NY has now made this illegal, although the internet has plenty of apartments for short-term rent.

      All advice welcome. Thanks

by luckymom58 Online Now Jun 20, 2009 at 8:29 AM

Does anyone know of any reasonable car rental places between LaGuardia and Smithtown, LI/Expressway exit 111 ? We are flying into LaGuardia on Friday,
July 3rd and return to LaGuardia Sunday, July 12th. Usually it's around500 for a week give or take but they want1,000 even w/ my entertainment coupon!

Trying to avoid having family drive us into the Airport. If we could get a location close to LaGuardia, we could take a taxi or car service -- but most of the car rental places aren't open on Sundays.

Does the Train go out from LaGuardia to Long Island?

      Center Moriches place to stay

Need a bed-and-breakfast, hostel or hotel (last resort) for the July 19th weekend in Center Moriches, Long Island area. 2-3 adults, 3 children. Have experience with European-type hostels and rest houses. Would prefer something other than a chain hotel or motel but if nothing else exists, please tell me about whatever type accomodation is available in the area. Finances can handle rates at mid-range or below. Thanks in advance.

      Go through Manhattan or not?

by calcaf38 Online Now Sep 23, 2007 at 1:01 PM

I am going to a family reunion in Greenlawn L.I. near Huntington Station, next weekend. I've never been to Long Island.

I'll be driving from Pennsylvania, and reaching the NYC area mid-day on a Saturday

Yahoo Maps advises me to go through the Holland Tunnel, go on to Brooklyn, and then on the L.I. Expressway.

Is this a good scenario? My first instinct was to stay South, away from Manhattan, cross at the Verazzano bridge, and much later find some way North.

It all looks like a harrowing drive. How much time should I allot from myself from, say, Newark (which takes me three hours to get to from PA)?

      Thank you for your contribution.

    • JFK - Long Island by public transport

by saralikesart Online Now Mar 17, 2006 at 3:18 AM

Advice needed - our Manhattan home exchange is going ahead (hooray), but our best price flight arrives at 1.30pm on August 30th - two days before we can move in. We like the idea of visiting and relaxing somewhere that's not Manhattan directly from JFK (on public transport). It can't be the Bridgehampton area, because there's a huge horsey event taking place on the dates we'd be there. Montauk, Amagansett and around sound lovely - but we don't want to spend loads on accommodation - it would cancel out the good value flights. We also don't want to lug luggage more than we have to either from the airplane or back to Manhattan on the Friday afternoon. Are there any reasonably priced lodgings, near the train stations (or bus stops), for two nights at the end of August? Should we go to Brooklyn instead?

Questions about driving around Long Island

by karenincalifornia Online Now Jan 22, 2006 at 1:31 PM

I will be taking a car to Long Island. Do I need to make reservations on the Bridgeport/Port Jefferson ferry if I am going against traffic (TO Long Island 9:00 am - FROM Long Island 3:00 pm)

How long does it take to get from Port Jefferson to Montauk at 10:30 am on a weekday?

If I decide I don't want to drive all the way out to Montauk, are there equally charming towns along the way?

      Thanks for your help!
