    • SF to Monterey Day Trip

San Francisco May 20, 2013 at 11:18 AM

I'd like to do this as a day trip. I did consider spending the night, but our accommodations for the week are already paid for as a weeky rate.

I'm thinking of taking Hwy 1 down and Hwy 101 back. I don't care to spend a really long time on Hwy 1, but would like to see some of the coast. At which point would you suggest picking up Hwy 1?

And would you take Hwy 68 to Salinas to access Hwy 101 when it is time to head back to SF?

I did read that Big Sur had wonderful views, but with only one day allocated to this, I don't think that is possible.
I'm traveling with my husband and older kids (26-16). We don't plan to stop in Santa Cruz to see the boardwalk entertainment.

I'd appreciate any opinions you might have. Thanks!

We'll be coming from Santa Monica and I had previously thought we could cab in and walk to all of these somewhat close locations, and then cab back at night. Do you recommend this, or would renting a car be a better option?

    • Taxi Driver

Los Angeles May 28, 2013 at 7:09 PM

Taxi driver offers to pick us up at the Getty Villa after our visit, but arrives in 'his own car.'
We are two elderly Australians, traveled to USA for conference and visited New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco and Los Angeles. Last day of our trip and wanted to see Getty. Took a Yellow Cab outside Hilton LAX and very friendly driver. Offers to leave us at Malibu for lunch, pick us up, take us to Getty. Offers to take us to Hilton LAX at Getty Villa closing time.
Driver greets us in own car and against my own code, we got in. Deadlatched the doors, offered to take us the scenic route to hotel with a charge of US$45. I felt uneasy and feigned an upset stomach - threatened possible 'throw-up'. After that he drove us to the hotel, quick smart.
We are puzzled...and feeling foolish. Has this happened to anyone else travelling or living in LA? Was this driver a genuine good Samaritan, or was he scamming? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

How long (a) to (b) in Los Angeles/Freeway or other roads best?

Los Angeles May 20, 2013 at 5:50 AM

      Hi
We are visiting in June, staying in Eagle Rock and have the following on our hitlist - Santa Monica, Getty Center, Griffith Observatory and main Hollywood sights. We will have our own car but only two full days and I am worried that getting from A to B will take a lot of time as it did on one past visit. Not sure either how to group these attractions geopgraphically and split across the two days. My questions are these:
When are LA peak hour(s) for traffic and yeah, I know it is pretty busy all the time?
Are we better generally using the I and Freeways to get across the city or might other routes be less busy?
If travelling from Getty Center to Griffith Observ. Is it worth going north up 405 and peeling off on Mulholland and driving east at least as far as Laurel Canyon and dropping down on to Franklin or Hollywood Blvds, I am thinking in terms of views/more interest or will this just take forever (Google maps suggests going north and east on the 101). We want some of the journeying to be interesting if possible but Mulholland possibly aside, our main concern is to get from a to b wasting as little time as possible.

      Thanks,
      Sam from England

We are coming in from Santa Barbara hoping to call in on Santa Monica and Malibu (might even stay one night if people recomend) BUT what is the driving like for a Brit not used to the traffic, is it easy (ish) to get to the Mary at Long Beach. Dont want to have a panic attack!! It looks like an easyish 405 but when blow up the map theres a lot of spaghetti like roads. Advice please, Thank you

I have booked to come to the USA for the first time, visiting San Fransisco, Las Vegas and Long Beach. We are staying in the Westin towards the end of September. I booked Long Beach, because I am not really interested in Hollywood and I wanted a chilled out end to our trip. (Nicebeach, restaurants and maybe a couple of excursions) Reading a little more about Long Beach now, I worry I have boooked to come to somewhere that is quite unsafe and I will have to constantly worry about our safety. Although it may be expensive to do so, should I change and book Redondo instead? Thanks Mgwidow

Need Hotel Stay Near Catalina Ferry Port

by atufft Online Now Mar 29, 2012 at 10:19 PM

I've been studying the possibility of staying at the Queen Mary, but since we have our dog with us, the extra75- fee seems a bit much for place that seems like a run-down tourist trap. But, then the pet friendly Motel 6 seems to offer nothing in terms of experience, even for one night stay. All we want is a decent one night experience in the hours before getting on the ferry to Catalina Island. So, it seems that we could do better to stay somewhere else within the LA basin, within reasonable distance of the Catalina Port. We will drive from Northern California, so getting to the last ferry departing on Sunday--5:45PM--also seems difficult. So, does anyone have a unique, and not overly expensive LA hotel recommendation, a place where we can get out on the street to walk the dog without getting run over, and get non-corporate style food to eat? I know, this seems like I'm asking too much from LA, or am I?

      the safety of public transit

by deblaya Online Now Jan 4, 2007 at 8:16 AM

Hello, I'll be visiting Long Beach next week for 3 days and will be staying at a hotel near the waterfront. My plan is to spend 2 days in the hollywood/santa monica area and 1 day at a beach. According to the MTA website theres the 'blue line' that goes to LA and I can transfer to the 'green line' to go to Rotondo and transfer to the 'red line' to go to hollywood. My questions are: Is it safe to travel through southern LA from Long Beach, ie. through Compton and other areas. And if its not safe can anyone recommend a better (yet cheap) way to go to the places I mentioned. I'm a young female travelling alone and I don't want to put myself in any dangerous situations. Thanks!

by loralu Online Now Nov 14, 2006 at 12:06 PM

Hey - I've enjoyed reading some of the Q&A regarding the area. Looking for a bit of sunshine, beach time, relax, maybe mild hiking, place for my dogs to hang, meet some *interesting* people, quiet time but also nice music (jazz or Dj house or break beat music) at night, perhaps. I'll be driving from Denver with 2 huskies sometime here late November or December. So don't want to go somewhere that's in 90's - hopefully no hotter than mid 80's. Hoping for a place that is dog-friendly and looking for a potential hostel or low-key hotel that we can stay at that's clean. I figure this is the closest, nicest area to Denver that has beach but am open for other suggestions. I also like Ultimate frisbee :) I read about Long Beach so that doesn't sound as interesting as the other places like Venice, Santa Monica, Redondo, Hermosa, etc. Never been to this area so have no idea what to expect. Any advice is welcome!

Hello Can anybody tell me whether there is public transit available from LAX to Long Beach (specifically the Queen Mary) mid-week, mid-day? How complicated is it to get from the airport to LB? What does it cost? Also, I've heard that there's a water taxi or something from the Queen Mary to the Convention Centre...if so, what's the schedule like, and what does it cost? Thanks very much for any advice! torontoharmreduction@yahoo.ca

Hey all I'm not totally sure if this is the right place to post or if it'll get a reply, but I'm going to California this October. Obviously it's not the best time of year but its the only time I really have free and it's fairly cheap to get flights then. Anywho, I'm a 17 yeard old guy and will probably be travelling alone depending on how reliable my friends who also want to go are. I was thinking of Long Beach as a good place to go to. On my trip I'll just want to chill out, do some shopping, have some fun, and maybe meet some other young people, because I'm a very social person. Do you think Long beach is a decent place for that kinda normal stuff or is there somewhere else you could recommend? Thanks Sam
