Gatwick Airport to Bath by train

by Femiluv Online Now May 4, 2012 at 6:43 AM

I already booked my train for May 7. Traveling from Gatwick with a change at Reading, then to Bath. If you're familiar with Gatwick airport, how do I get to the train station? Anything I should be aware of? Sounds like a dumb question because airports are usually full of signs. But, I'll be traveling alone and better safe than sorry. Thanks!

You know, I thought this would be very easy to find on the Gatwick Airport site but far from it! I eventually found a map on the First Great Western site - I imagine this is the train company you will be using. firstgreatwestern.co.uk/Your... However, you really need not bother - the station is very well sign-posted, just follow the signs - I can't remember exactly but the sign may say "Railway station" or "Trains" or just show the logo, which is a set of parallel lines with a tick on the top line and a tick on the bottom line, commonly called "crow's feet'. You do not want the signs that say Gatwick Express. Honestly, it couldn't be easier, despite my rather convoluted explanation! In case of doubt, ask an official for directions for the railway station for trains to Reading.

Agree with Hawkhead. Gatwick is indeed full of signs, so just follow the ones to the railway station and you will have no problems. It's adjacent to the South terminal and a few minutes by shuttle train (unstaffed) from the North terminal. gatwickairport.com/transport... has some info. You can see the railway station entrance/exit marked on the map of the South terminal here: gatwickairport.com/Documents... Reading station is also very well-signed, so no probs there either. :-)

Firstly, no such thing as a dumb question etc. I am with the two extremely knowledgeable members above. Gatwick is a whole lot easier to navigate, from ether terminal, it is all well sgnposted and they do have lots of roaming staff with "I'm here to help" or something similar on the Tshirts. Honestly, don't sweat LGW, it is one of the more user friendly places I have been. As a general indicator, the trains run through the lower part of the complex so you will need to go down to get there. Really, it is a doddle. About the only thing to "be aware of" is that you cannot take luggage trolleys into the train station for obvious safety reasons so if you are carrying heavy baggage you may need to be consider that. Hope this assists, fergy.

One other thing, before you go down to the platforms check the huge departures/destination board in the main hall for the right one for your train. There are dozens of trains out of Gatwick each hour, so you may have to wait a little before yours is displayed, but you don't want to be milling around and going up and down stairs unnecessarily. All the station facilities eg shops are at this level, there is nothing on the platforms themselves. Gatwick Airport station has six platforms, Reading trains normally leave from Platform 3 but this of course can change.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I already purchased my tickets ahead of time as suggested by VT users months ago, because I will be doing a lot of traveling (England, Wales & Scotland in 7 days).
