Homestay Accommodation

Hi I would like to know whether anyone has used one of the homestay agenices for accommodation on the internet? I am worried whether the agencies are genuine, but if they are, I thought it looks like a good alternative to hostels. I am going to be coming to London and need to find somewhere to stay for up to a month whilst I arrange a job and longer term accommodation. Can anyone recommend either way?
