Does anyone know anything about the Le Meridien Hotel near Russell square? My mom and aunt already booked this hotel online, and then they saw some not so nice reviews about it. Can anyone tell me anything about it? Thanks
I've never stayed in this hotel, but I have stayed at a number of Meridien hotels around the world and always been very satisfied. It's a pretty high-end hotel chain, so the rooms and the service tend to be quite nice.

The Russell is a sensational Victorian building dominating Russell Square. An extraordinary brown and cream marble foyer greets guests and the hotel bar is a huge and ornate Victorian interior (30 foot ceilings, chandeliers etc). As it is Victorian, it has been converted into a modern hotel and all the associated problems. Its dull. The reception is tucked round the corner: there are long corridors of drab carpets and chipboard doors. Lifts are tiny. But the rooms vary enormously. I stayed a couple of nights a couple of months ago and booked online. As I chose the hotel because I intended to be partying for most of the night and it was in a great location, it didn't worry me. But the room was tatty and old furnishings (although quite large) - it reminded me of B&B style accommodation in Northern England where you paid £20 a night. But there are also much grander rooms that fit the Meridien style that I have stayed in before overseas (and paid less than this drab room in London). The cheaper online rooms also tend to look onto the inner 'courtyard' of boilers, air-con units etc and receive little light. All in all, completely unimpressive, esp. for cheap online hotel rooms. I wouldn't recommend it. You might do a lot better to try the George Hotel in nearby Cartwright Gardens - in fact this area of Bloomsbury and Cartwright Gardens in particular seems to be full of reasonable (by London standards!) hotels.

I stayed at the Russell 3 years ago while it was undergoing some renovations. My room was spacious and the bathroom was great--unlike many smaller hotels in the Bloomsbury area. It's not the most exciting or snazziest place to stay. I found the staff friendly & helpful. it's location is very convenient for almost anything you wnat to do in London--the tube stop is just a short walk. Pubs, restaurants, a laundromat, banks--all within a few blocks. Plus lovely Russell Square on your doorstep.
