London for a day

by sabsi Online Now Feb 11, 2003 at 10:41 AM

Hi! In April I will have a day to spend in London on my way back from North England down to the continent. I have been to London quite a few times so I have seen the usual stuff. Now I want to see something new! Any ideas where I could go? The last time I was there was before London Eye was built. Is it worth the money? Are the queues still long (I will be there on a Thursday)? Is it better at day or at night? Thanks for all your ideas and hints! Sabs

Hello Sabsi, Why not see outer London. It takes an effort to get there, but you realy get in contact with some of the most wonderful cottage-villages in England. Examples: Denham and Amersham in the Western districts. Furthermore I might suggest to visit Greenwich (if you didn't do that already). Here lays a wonderful Cutty Sark-ship, one finds here the official 0-meridian that is represented best in the planetarium. Just some ideas for an off the centre idea. Visualisation you can find on my page of London. Have a nice visit to the British capitol. Regards, Paul

Hey Sabs, The London Eye was pretty cool in my opinion though many consider it a tourist trap. If it's a sunny day you have a fabulous view of the city. If you decide to go, head there first thing in the morning. I was at the door when it opened at 9, bought my ticket about 2 minutes later and was onboard within 5 minutes. There were very few people this early and you might get a pod to yourself, I was with 2 other people so we were able to take pics of each other inside. Wish I was going to be there :-( Laura

Arrgh, don't know what's wrong with VT right now but the long answer I had just typed out disappeared into thin air :-{ As to the Eye, I enjoyed it, a sunny day is the best time to go. The view from the Eye is fantastic IMHO. Be there at 9 when the door opens and you'll have your ticket within minutes and be onboard the Eye right after that without a lineup. You can prepurchase your ticket online if you wish as well. Wish I was there too :-( Laura

OK, Sabs. And if you do follow that other suggestion about Amersham, take lots of pics! That's where my ancestors are from, dating back to 1800s, I want to visit there myself someday. Could finally read all the replies by reading them from your homepage :-S

Sabsi, I think the Eye is interesting. Since the whole ride goes 30 minutes, I would suggest timing it so that you get there a bit before sunset. If you can reserve/pay your ticket online with a credit card(see my London page for website) so you do not need to wait in line for ticket, just get your ticket from the machine (slide your card that you used to buy ticket then the ticket will be printed). The time on the ticet really is not that serious, since no one knows WHEN exactly you can get onto the Eye, due to the length of the queue. Yes, you will have to wait in queue for bording after you have your ticket. We waited around 15 minutes for he 19:00 ride in April. Have a good time.

Hi Sabs, When you say new do you mean new build ? I haven't been up in the Eye yet but I'm told it's worth it. For something old which often gets missed try Apsley House on Hyde Park Corner. London home of Duke of Wellington with splendid interior and a china room with the most magnificent dinner services, including a replica Egyptian Temple table centre ! For something completely different try the modern architecture of the Barbican. Very strange lay out with fountains and terraces. And then there is Tate Modern. Regards

Hiya Sabs, I agree with nada1712: The South Bank Walk with Borough Market, The Globe theatre, Southwark Cathedral, Tate Modern and last but not least the Millenium Bridge is definetely worth a stroll. But be informed about what to see at Tate Modern in advance otherwise you might get lost in all that strange stuff. :-))) I am not that interested in art, but there are really interesting exhibitions to see. And the cafes on the upper level offer secenic views to the Thames, Millenium Bridge and St. Pauls. Last but not leat it is for free ... :-)) London Eye is a must. I was there last september on a sunny thursday afternoon and it took me about 30 mins to get in. The only problem: Taking photos of the east (St. Pauls) was good but to the west (Big Ben and Westminster) was impossible because of the low sun ... Have fun Holger :-)

I think the London Eye is worth it - especially as night falls. I have done it twice and that seemed the better time. But take in the GLC building exhibitions as well - the new Saatchi gallery is opening there. The Dali is worth it, too. Definitely agree with the South Bank walk - I enjoy doing it whenever I am up there (about twice a month). Good visiting!
