Travel suggestions between Trofors, Nordland and Bo, Telemark areas, please.

      Norway Nov 2, 2015 at 10:05 AM

In August we will be visiting Hattfjeldal near Trofors and also want to visit Seljord near Bo to visit where my ancestors are from. Looking for suggestions on how to do it. I checked the train possibilities though to make the entire trip is too long. One of us traveling has only a tolerance of 5 hours on the train thus, between Trofors and Trondheim is fine by Train. Then maybe fly to or from Oslo and take the train to Bo.

Overall we are not in a rush and see that we could take a Hurtigruten ship in either direction between Tondheim and Bronnoysund if the schedule fits in. We are in early planning and haven't yet determined where we will fly into, Bergen or Oslo from Chicago. Any suggestions on which city or possible intermediate stops are worthwhile seeing? I am not familiar enough with Norway and therefore all comments are greatly appreciated.

We are visitng to Stavanger during the winter and wanted to see Kjeragbolten and the pulpit rock. It is impossible to hike, but all the packages for boat cruises for Kjeragbolten seems to be related to hiking. Is there a way that I can see both Kjeragbolten and pulpit rock in a boat cruise?
I see boat cruise options for pulpit rock, but not sure if Kjeragbolten is included somehow unspecified.

    • Compressed Norway in Nutshell in November

      Flåm Nov 1, 2015 at 2:21 PM

Is it possible in early November (next wk), to do a rather compressed one day side trip from Oslo with following:
      Oslo-Myrdal (Eurailpass), Myrdal-Flam (Flamsbana), Flam - Gudvangen (ferry), Gudvangen-Voss (bus), Voss-Oslo
(eurailpass-hopefully arriving before 24:00 to maximize use of single day on the pass? I have read that there's a single ferry in winter months, but can't pinpoint the time of departure from Flam. I realize it's a very full day, but I'm trying to get best use of my 5 days of train travel in 2 weeks of travel in Norway in November. Thanks for reply.

    • Appropriate clothing for Norway/Svalbard in February/March?

      Norway Oct 29, 2015 at 7:45 AM

I'll be going through Europe in February and March of 2016.

I was sent this link ( ) in recommendations on how to dress appropriately, but I was wondering if there was a specific brand or type of jacket that northern Norwegians/Svalbardians (?) usually wear? I'll also be going to other surrounding countries of varying temperatures (ie Iceland, Denmark, Netherlands but also Lapland Finland), so I would prefer to be able to zip an inner layer off so I don't overheat? I only want to bring a carry on and backpack so I would prefer not to bring 2 different jackets ..??

I've never traveled over the winter so I don't know much of winter climate outside of New York. I researched the average winter temperatures but I know wind and lack of sunlight makes a huge difference in how cold it feels as well ......

I'm just wondering if there's a certain type of clothing that people in countries up north swear by? My friend told me to get a Canadian goose jacket but I won't want to throw 600$ towards a jacket and not be warm enough.

Should I just wear an old jacket to Europe and plan to buy one there? Same with long underwear? I've never seen any being sold around here, and those "heattech leggings" that Uniqlo sells doesn't really do much even in America soOo ..

Please let me know, thank you :)

      scandinavia euro pass

      Norway Nov 16, 2015 at 2:57 PM

we are going to buy the Scandinavia euro rail pass. my question is will it cover all the scenic routes that I will be doing while in Norway?? does it include the ferry that I will do ??
ferry between Geiranger and Hellesylt, the longer ferry trip between Geiranger and Valldal, the one-and-a-half-hour sightseeing trip on board M/S Geirangerfjord

below are the scenic rail routes
      - Begin in Oslo, including the Bergen Railway, which runs over the Hardangervidda mountain plateau.
No other train ride between two cities in Europe is at a higher altitude than the one between Oslo and Bergen. This line takes in some dazzling scenery, with the most spectacular stretch being the one over the Hardangervidda,

      • The famous Flåm Railway, the world's steepest.
This will take you down to the village of Flåm, in the innermost corner of the Aurlandfjord. The Aurlandsfjord is an arm of the mighty Sognefjord, Norway's longest fjord. A must for any rail enthusiast, the Flåm Railway, one of the world's steepest railways on normal gauge, is one of Norway's most popular attractions, and a masterpiece of Norwegian engineering.

      • Dovre Railway from Oslo to Trondheim with its sideline the Rauma Railway between Dombås and Åndalsnes

Just wondering if someone can provide advice about the road conditions that could be expected in late March. I drive on the left hand side of the road at home so feel a little uncertain about driving in Lofoten Islands. I would also be keen to have an understanding about how busy the roads are likely to be at that time of the year.

So, we're doing a bike tour in Lofoten in August. Is it worth making a round trip (Which would be about 400 km) along the southern coasts first and the northern coasts getting back? Or are we better off getting from Moskenes to Svolvaer in one go and then use the days we have left for something else around Bodo, or for going further west of Svolvaer?

I am doing a photo trip for Northern Lights Mar 5-10 /13 and am trying to figure out a packing list. Temps on line show around freezing, but not sure what wind, rain/snow and dark of night might be like. I'm from Canada so have lots of heavy winter gear, but my question is how much will I need. Heavy winter boots, or hiking boots and warm socks? Wind/rain overpants and long underwear, or insulated snowmobile type pants? Tips from anyone who has been there in March would be helpful, or especially anyone who has done a Northern lights photo trip?

Places to stay in Lofoten & fishing trips?

by MizBlack Online Now Mar 22, 2012 at 8:21 AM

      Hello Everyone!

I’m planning to make a trip to Lofoten this june and I have a few questions which I need help on.
First of all, I’m planning to head over to Lofton by taking a ferry from bodo. I’ll be trying get around by bus, bikes or just walking. (I won’t be renting a car since I don’t have a driver’s license.)

      1. Is Reine accessible and a good place to stay? Or would it be better to stay in other villages like Henningsvaer or Å?

      2. Due to a budget constraint, I would prefer to rent a room in a guesthouse or an apartment rather than a Rorbuer. Are there any other similar accommodations in Reine like this? -->

      3. Am I able to go for fishing trips like this --> in Reine?

    • Renting a car in Lofoten Islands

by shpadre Online Now Mar 16, 2011 at 8:12 AM

On our last trip to Norway, we did not have a car while we visited the Lofoten Islands. This limited our movement. We stayed outside Svolvaer and had to take a taxi to our hotel and then were lucky that our hotel had bicycles to borrow so we could go out and eat our meals.

So on an upcoming trip to the islands (August this year), we want to get a car. Where is the best place to rent a car? Can we rent one in Svolvaer (we'd prefer to use that as our gateway to the islands, taking the express boat from Bodo). Or we may fly to Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes. Can we get a car there? A third option is what says: "If you drive, you can take the car ferry from Bodø across to Moskenes, Værøy or Røst. Or you can drive further north of Bodø, to Skutvik, and take the car ferry across to Skrova or Svolvær."

What's recommended - what's the best place to get a car to get around the islands?
