Hello, We have just booked the flights to Ljubljana in the beginning of June. We are going to spend 4 days in Ljubljana and thought to rent a car for 1 day for being able to visit Lake Bled. As far as I have understood it does not take much longer than one hour to reach Lake Bled from Ljubljana so does anyone have any good recommendations where to drive after Lake Bled before returning the car in the evening? Are there some caves, waterfalls or picturesque villages nearby Lake Bled perhaps? Is it possible to return from Lake Bled and the surroundings to Ljubljana via some smaller country roads instead of the highway? Thanks for the replies already in advance!
Definitely visit Postojna Caves near Ljubljana. After Bled, head for lovely Lake Bohinj (30 minutes away), where a little trek through gorgeous woods takes you to the mystical Slap Savica waterfalls & emerald pool :-)

I would go to Bled on the bus (hourly from outside Ljubljana railway station) http://www.ap-ljubljana.si/eng/ (timetables) and use your car day to not only visit Skocjan caves (much less tourist-oriented than Postonja and equally imporessive ,if not more so) park-skocjanske-jame.si/eng/... and then carry on down to the coast to explore the small & historical Venetian port of Piran. Alternatively use the car for Bled then carry on to Bohinj and explore the minor roads in that area.

We opted to spend two days in Ljub. which was just about right and then we rented a car and drove to Piran, stopping by Postojna caves and Skocjan caves (the more impressive of the two in my opinion) and Predjama Castle. The next day we got up and drove to Lake Bled and also visited Lake Bohinj and the Slavica waterfall nearby. Alternatively you could do that as 2 day trips and stay based in Ljub., personally of all of those places Piran is the one I would eliminate if time becomes a factor. I don't know which I would pick if you asked me whether to do the caves or the lakes, both are definitely worth seeing. '

If you decide to visti Bohinj lake (I like it better, more dramatic, deep) you can park by cable car station and take the cable car to Vogel (each hour and 30 min past the hour, 13 EUR return ticket) for amazing views and pristine alpine experience. A short walk to Merjasec restaurant might be interesting - it's like a tiny etnographic museum. Local food! Or/and after visiting Bohinj, return to bohinjska Bela, and take the the car-train brom Bohinjska Bela (be there minimum 10 minutes before departure!) slo-zeleznice.si/en/passenge... It's like n amusement park ride through the tunnel to a completely different area and climate, to emerald green Soca river and its surroundings. After the tunnel, the ride continues through gorgeous lanIf interested in major historical events, a visit to Kobarid museum is a must. Some fabulous restaurants very close to it! (plus Hisa Franko a bit further from the citiy center) Then you can continue by car through Goriska region -(wine routes!), Ajdovscina, maybe even catch the last tour of the Postojna caves at 5PM. Also an interesting sightseeing option slo-zeleznice.si/en/passenge... perhaps this would be more logical if you choose to go from the airport to for example Kranjska Gora do the heritage train thinh for a whole day, and then the next day take public transport to Ljubljana and continue exploring there, get a car and go to skocjan, coastal area ... Have a great trip!

Just one suggestion, regarding to your demand. Radovljica is lovely ancient town not fare away from Bled (local road-Ljubljana direction). burger.si/Radovljica/2008_Me... Link is one of Radovljica virtual guide. To have a walk through the old town nucleus could be a pleasant adventure. Beekeeping museum is one of the attractions in the town. There are some romantic restaurants in the town. “Lectar” is one of the most well-known, but not the cheapest one.

Hello, I went to Bled to do watercolors and loved it. Yes, it takes only one hour if the highway is not blocked by traffic...there is one spot about halfway...that is a hassle. Also, there is another way to go, on a smaller road, USE THE MAP because it is difficult to stay on this road at times. However, you will want to drive all the way around the lake...and then go to the castle at the top of the small mountain that overlooks the lake. The view is AWESOME and you look down on a tiny island with a chapel. see this and the photos I took at: Bled Things to Do Tips by painterdave Don't try to park along the lake as they give tickets for this! Your trip to Bled will take the whole day if you want to see it and enjoy its beauty. If you want to know of a good place to eat "local" food with no tourists, send me an email. Happy Trip

Bled is an easy day trip via public transport from Ljubljana. I would use the car for a day trip through the Triglav National Park.
