Is it a good idea to rent a car to get from the airport to our hotel in the Chiado area of Lisbon or is it inexpensive to get to our hotel from the airport and travel around Lisbon without a car? If we do not need a car, is there any particular taxi that is the best to use to and from the airport?
This is your bus: Aerobus, number 91) ana.pt/portal/page/portal/AN...

no need for a car to travel about lisbon, you either walk or take trams. for day trips we took busses.

Even a taxi from the aiport is rather inexpensive. If you plan to stay several days, a multiday transport pass is a very good investment.

don't think there's any practical need to rent a car in Lisbon it's a good option to do if when you intend to travel around Portugal and have the leisure of time and flexibility otherwise Lisbon has excellent public transport system - buses, trams, express trains to Sintra and Cascais, funiculars, metro system - all very accessible and inexpensive take the AeroBus to the city center from the airport which runs every 15-20 mins. interval at 3.50Euros a ride...it's comfortable, quick and cheap definitely. pick it up just right outside the arrival terminal

Agree absolutely that a car is unnecessary for Lisbon. As with all European cities, a car is an expensive hassle rather than a hep. Use public transport ad your feet to get around this lovely city. The Aerobus is also an excellent service, with stops announced in English as well as electronically displayed.

I agree as above, just adding beside it's a need or not, a car park in Lisbona is very difficoult to find.

No need for a vehicle, the metro system is excellent, city trams are good. We had 9 days during Sept 2009 and had no trouble getting around, sometimes used the bus, metro often and tram occassionally. We used Cascais as our base (seaside town) and the metro would get us into Lisbon in a half hour.

a little clarification on a member's post - it's thru the fast Cascais electric train that's there for one to get on if you need to visit Cascais...unless you would decide to rent your own transport...it's cheap fast comfortable and highly scenic NOT THE METRO where it's limited within proper Lisbon and does not extend beyond it

Chiming in: completely no car needed for Lisbon. Very walkable and nice Metro/train services. Enjoy...it's wonderful! Take in some fado nightclub and the seafood is some of the best in the world!

I was in Lisbon in September last year with a car and found it extremely frustrating to get around. Parking is very limited in Lisbon so I would recommend getting a taxi/bus from the airport and using public transport. Have a great time!
