Restaurants: Cash or Credit Cards?

by swdke Online Now Apr 25, 2012 at 12:13 PM

Will be traveling through Paracas, Nazca, Arequipa, Colca, Puno, Cusco, Machu Picchu, will I be able to easily use credit cards, or should I plan on having cash for meals? Thanks!

Bigger towns and cities will have credit card facilities, but the smaller ones (suhc as those in the Colca region) won't necessarily. The smaller the restaurant, less the chance credit cards will be accepted/welcomed. And, as it any developing world country, it's not a given that the electricity is always working. I would always make sure that you have cash to hand, just in case.

Hi I recommend you always carry in your pocket 100 new soles (Peruvian currency) that is more than enough to eat and pay in cash, equivalent to 35 or so U.S. dollars, for the rest you can pay by card at any restaurant in the same city; since most restaurants away, no payment system by credit card ..... remember only 100 new soles as cash to eat anything here .... I have to serve and they can help. Tito

I just got back from Peru and can tell you that most restaurants in the larger cities will accept credit cards, BUT, Visa is the preferred card. Mastercard is not anywhere near as widely accepted. The 100 soles cash rule is pretty good advice, but beware of the folks who tell you that food is so cheap in Peru that you can eat all day on10.00...WRONG!!! Just an average dinner with a Pisco Sour or a beer will cost 35-40 soles (13-15 bucks) per person. When I was doing research for my trip, I heard all sorts of stories about how cheap the food was...when I got there, I looked for those places. I found some, but they're not places that you would probably take your wife to.
