Hey, I am planning to stop in Lima on my flight down to Buenos Aires. I could stay for about a week, but would that be too long? What is there to do and see in Lima? Would it be possible to go down to see the Machu Picchu? How long does that take? How would I get there? Is it problematic to travel in Peru without knowing any Spanish? All together I have 4 weeks for my travels in South America. My plans are to stay in Lima for one week, then two weeks in Buenos Aires to take a Spanish course and then maybe another week for traveling? Who could give me any tips for that?? So many open questions... Thanks, Jana

As for the previous warning, there have been a couple of isolated events that shouldn't be taken as a pattern. Due to work I am doing monthly trips to northern, central and southern Peru just using buses and public transportation, and have had no problem at all. Needless to say, if you plan to use planes and not roads then there is nothing to worry about. As for your questions, let's try to answer all: - July and August is the high season for tourism in here in Peru. That is, main cities like Cusco, Arequipa and Iquitos will have a lot of tourists. This may be helpful because it will be easier to communicate in languages other than Spanish (mainly English), but could be a problem if you prefer to be in calmed places. - One week in Peru seems reasonable. You could come to Lima, stay a couple of days, then go to Cusco by plane, stay 3-4 days there, and then return to Lima just to catch your flight to Buenos Aires. On those days you could do a city tour, visit some museums and the ruins nearby, as well as Machu Picchu. - Regarding your stay in South America, everything depends on your interests. One week in Peru and two in Bs. As. seems reasonable. If you want nature, a relaxed environment and nice people, you could consider Brazil. There are cheap, nice tours sold from Buenos Aires to Iguaçú and Rio de Janeiro. If you prefer to complete the Argentinian experience, you could go to the Patagonian side. Of course, you could also pick two weeks in Peru and two weeks in Argentina. Enjoy your trip! Flor de Maria

I just read this other posting from you. Just a suggestion, since you plan to learn some spanish in Buenos Aires, you could consider to go there first and stop in Perú when coming back to USA. I don't know Argentina, but I would bet that you will find more people speaking english there, espacially in the capital. After your two weeks, you will be able to communicate a bit more with peruvians.

Hey, many thanks for your detailed answer. Helps a lot! I guess, I am generally sure about my trip now. Lima Monday through Friday with three day trip to Cuszco to see the Machu Picchu. Could you give me any tipps on that? Where can I stay in Cuszco? Can or should I book any tours in advance? How much is it? I would then fly back to Lima to catch my flight to Buenos Aires. I would take my two week course there and travel inbetween and afterwards for a couple of days before I fly back to Germany from there. What would you definitely recommend to do in and around Buenos Aires? Thanks so much to all who reply! Jana
