Am I correct in saying the last train to Lille in the evening leaves Lens at 19.44 ? I need to depart Lens at about 21.30 after a football game. Are there any alternatives apart from a taxi or staying overnight ?
check www.sncf.com for example, for today the last train is 9 pm

You can look at http://www.voyages-sncf.com/ as above or, in English, at bahn.com/i/view/overseas/en/... Last train back from Lens today Saturday is 2103, on weekdays 2149 (these later departures include a change of train..you are probably seeing the 1944 on whichever site you are using as the last direct train).

It's 23 miles from Lens to Lille, so a taxi is going to be very costly. France doesn't do public transport in the late evenings except in the very biggest cities.

Most of Lens home games kickoff at 2000hrs, so it's going to be nearer 2200hrs when the game ends.
