Is it possible to obtain a transit visa at the Eastern border and drive through Libya to Tunisia? If yes, is there a convoy or do I go without protection? I will be on my way from Cape Town to the UK... Regards, Dave
I have no information on the situation as of right now. When, in the old days, we were in the country, we saw just 1 (one) road sign outside Tripolis in the whole country - and it was in Arabic! So no orientation in the cities and outside. There were a lot of contriol posts, where you had to show various papers (our guide had them). We had a convoy from the Egyptian border into the country. Libya at that time was safe. We got to know a little bit the attitude of the people. They were absolutely friendly. Thus it is a big question if they let you in for security reasons or if you want to really get in. If they let you in, you will need some local support to get along in the country if you are not able to speak some Arabic or at least some French. English in this wonderful country is not very useful. Don't think of continuing your trip to Algeria. It's not on the news, but the security situation and other aspects of travelling are more than dangerous and extremely complicated. I have a friend living there. Think about some alternatives. Good luck!

Thanks - Do you live in Libya? You talk with confidence! Most appreciated. After Libya, we plan on driving to Tunis and catching the ferry to Palmero and doing the Targa Florio route, then over to Rome, Genoa and to the UK. Have you heard any news re the elections? Is it possible/likely that we will get passage early November or should we plan to drive through Jordon and Syria - if possible! Are you aware of any vehicle ferries operating out of Alexandria to Greece or Italy? So many unknowns at the moment! Cheers, Dave

Hi Dave, No, I am not living in that country! Best is you contact your next ambassy and see what kind of help they can offer. Forget about going through Syria now and within the next months. Situation more than dangerous. There was a regular ferry from Alexandria via Syria to Venice. Service was suspended due to the political situation in Syria. On the web I only found one company offering services from Alexandria to Mersin (Turkey). http://www.menalines.com/main/ (In turkish only) At least there is a phone number. Also found their agency in Alexandria: , 32.saad zaghloul str. tel: +20 3 4862832 mail: general@kadmar.com Did not find any ferry from Israel to Europe. Good luck! Ulrich

Thanks Heaps! I have sent an email to Mena Lines just in case they reply one way or another... It will be fantastic to have "a way out" if we need one! Dave
