I am planning to spend 7 nights in Tibet during early Feb 2012. Would it be possible to go to Everest Base Camp (or somewhere to get good views of the high mountains, including Everest) in this short time. Any good guide/agency to recommend? How much would it cost approximately? Thanks
Our return trip to EBC was close to a week (three days to get there and three to get back), and we were there in May. The roads are not good and driving at 50 km/hr was as good as we could do on the back roads (which you take most of the way there). We did some sightseeing on the way and suspect you might be able to take a day off either direction if you went straight through. My Everest travelogue is at: "Mount Everest" - Tibet Travelogue by GrumpyDiver One week will likely cause issues with altitude sickness as you will not have anywhere near enough time to acclimatize. We were there for two weeks and spent the first one at lower altitides (Lhasa is at around 3500m, while EBC is over 5200m), before working our way up to higher altitudes. You have to be pretty close before you can actually see the mountains. I think we got our first glimpse of the mountains 2 or 3 hours before we actually got to EBC. I couldn't guess at what the winter conditions would be like. We were there in 2004 and I couldn't begin to guess what costs would be like today. Even back then you had to be on an authorized "tour", so the two of us used an official guide and driver, but did not travel with anyone else so the costs were all packaged together. Also don't forget you need an additional police permit to visit Everest region, over and above the permit for Tibet.
