We will be arriving in LeHavre on a cruise ship and I have arranged a rental car when we get there. Information about where to pick up the car relative to where we arrive is very sparse, along with what to expect in the way of tolls and traffic between the two locations. We have about 8 hours to complete our roundtrip journey with our main interest being Omaha Beach and the American cemetary. We are senior citizens. Are we making a mistake? Thank you
You can use one of the online route planners to plot your ideal route such as Google Maps or www.viamichelin.com According to Google Maps the journey from Le Havre to the Normandy American Cemetery which is east of St. Laurent-sur-Mer is up to 2 hours. From Le Havre you head out of the city for the enormous beautiful bridge PONT DE NORMANDIE en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pont_d... and you join the A-13 Motorway. L'Autoroute du Normandie. You continue all the way on this Motorway going around the town of Caen. Follow the route shown on Google Maps and you will find the turn off for St Laurent-Sur-Mer and if you look at the Satellite view, it is possible to see the NORMANDY AMERICAN CEMETERY AND MEMORIAL. Access to the coast road - Route d'Omaha Beach - can be seen. You can plan your return trip either by the same route or perhaps via Arromanches. And other sights. The Tolls on the road from Le Havre are €5 at the Bridge . €1 at a place called Quetteville, and €3.20 at a toll at Dozulé. So a €10 Note should cover your journey ! The other auto route site you can use is mappy.com. The fastest route directs you through Caen. Which is fine if you just want to see the landing site and American Cemetery. ( It is quite an emotional visit) However, you can also drive up the coast road (and avoid the tolls) where there are numerous small villages and other D-Day landing beaches. Some of the defensive barriers, gun emplacements are scattered about. However,the driving is very slow, oftentimes no more than 30 km per hour. Karl
