Lauterbrunnen valley view in late October

by phingy Online Now Mar 11, 2013 at 7:15 PM

Hi guys,

I'm planning on a 2 night trip to lauterbrunnen on 20 October and was wondering how is the view at the valley and of the mountains during that time?

It would be great if there are some greenery couple with snow at the mountain tops.

I'll also be taking the mountain rail to jungfrau one early morning. Any idea how's the weather during that time as well?

Appreciate your advice! THANK YOU!!!!

Late october is usually not a good time to visit the Swiss Alps.
The summer is over but the winter hasn't started yet. It gets dark early.
There will already be some snow on the mountain tops, but probably none in the valley.
As to what the weather will be like when you go up to Jungfraujoch is impossible to tell right now. It could be sunny with great views. It could be sunny, but above the clouds, so you'll be like in an airplane, looking at the top of the clouds in stead of the landscape. Or you cold be in the clouds and not see anything. You will only know that on the day itself.

We were there in early October and temps were in the 50's and 60's. Went up to Schilthorn our first morning as the forecast for the morning was clear skies. They have cameras in the hotels in Lauterbrunnen so you can check the view before you go up. We did a little hiking in the lower elevation of the mountains and walked along the entire valley floor. If you take a look at my Lauterbrunnen and Murren pages it will give you an idea of what the surroundings looked like when we were there in October, 2008.

Late October is bad as there is often a layer of low clouds/high fog between the valleys and the mountain tops. This means grey weather, dark in the valleys, no views of the mountains, but gorgeous blue sky on the mountain tops. Yes, you can expect snow on top all year round, it's probably still green down in the valley.

With only 2 nights you can easily be out of luck for any views, be it for the clouds/fog as described above or rainy weather.
