I wish it were a longer stay but I will only be in this wonderful city for 1 day. What would be the best way for my husband and I to spend the day? Also, we will be staying at the Hilton, going on a viking river cruise. Any suggestions on transportation from Hilton to river would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    • Need advice on our 15 days Switzerland itinerary

      Switzerland 4 hours ago

I had posted here earlier and had asked for help with my travel plan to Switzerland. Thanks to fellow VTs for your advice and input :) I have now worked out an itinerary which I hope you can advise on:

Me and my husband are near 50 and are average in terms of fitness...No hiking experience, but can walk for hours with stops when travelling. No need for shopping. Museums not necessary. Love photography.
We have purchased air tickets to arrive in Geneva on June 19 and leaving Geneva on Jul 4 and my preliminary plan is as follows:

Jun19 arriving Geneva at 10am. Tour Geneva Old town and city. Overnight Geneva.
Jun 20 Geneva - day trip to Annecy. Overnight Geneva
Jun21 departing Geneva, to Strasbourg. Overnight Strasbourg.
Jun22 departing Strasbourg mid day, to Colmar. Overnight Colmar.
Jun23 departing Colmar, to Lucerne. City tour Lucerne. Overnight Lucerne
Jun 24 Lucerne - golden trip to Mt Pilatus (steepest cogwheel train). Overnight Lucerne
Jun 25 Lucerne - Engelberg and Mt Titlus (Rotair) . Overnight Lucerne
Jun 26 Lucerne - day trip to Zurich , Rhine Falls, Schaffhausen . Overnight Lucerne
Jun 27 depart Lucerne, to Interlaken. tour Interlaken. Overnight Interlaken
Jun 28 Interlaken -Lake Thun/ Lake Brienz, Grindelwald or Jungfraujoch. Overnight Interlaken
Jun 29 Interlaken -to Murren, (trail from Murren to Gimmelwald 1.5hr, tram to Stechelberg, trail towards Lauterbrunnen, halfway visit Trummelboch Falls, then postbus back to Lauterbrunnen) or Schilithorn . Overnight Interlaken
Jun 30 Interlaken -to Zermatt, to Gornergrat. Overnight Interlaken
Jul 1 depart Interlaken early morning, to Bern(store luggage in train station). City tour Bern. To Lausanne. Overnight Lausanne
Jul 2 Lausanne - to Nyon, then cross the lake to Yvoire. Overnight Lausanne
Jul 3 Lausanne- to Montreaux, Vevey. Overnight Lausanne
Jul 4 depart Lausanne early morning - to Geneva. Flight at noon -- go home

One of the question is: Is Strasbourg and Colmar very similar? If that's the case, should I scrape Colmar from the itinerary and add another day in Interlaken area??

We will purchase the 15 days Swiss Pass. None of the hotel has been booked yet. We want to cover as much ground as possible while not getting too exhausted. This is a life long dream vacation to me, please advice if there are changes I should make to this plan to make it most memorable.

Thank you very much in advance. Any advise will be most appreciated :))

      Mürren Apr 18, 2014 at 10:04 AM

      Hi All,
We are in Lucerne and travelling to Murren tomorrow. We will be staying there for 3 days. We have a Swiss Felx Pass for 4 days (non consecutive). We will be validating the pass tomorrow for our travel to Murren. I am aware that it takes around 3 hours to reach Murren from Lucerne. So if we were to make an early start around 8-9AM, then is there something we can visit tomorrow before/after checking in our Murren hotel. This will allow us to maximise the usage of our Swiss pass.
Also, can you please advise what can we do in Murren for the other 2 days without using the Swiss pass ? For one of the days we have booked a Paragliding experience. We were were planning to hike the village of Gimmewald. Any other suggestions ?
      Appreciate your help.

by eeuzc Online Now Oct 23, 2010 at 5:33 AM

      Hi,
I will be moving to Lausanne in January 2011 for doctoral studies at UNIL. Since I will be travelling to Europe for the first time, and that too bang in the middle of the winter I needed some tips on the climate during this time and the clothing I should carry. Moreover, I am coming from India, so I expect a vast change in the temperature I will experience (25deg C in mumbai to about 4deg C in lausanne).

I am planning to buy a thick jacket or coat and warm sweater (the best I can get here) and do more shopping there if needed so that I dont need to carry a lot luggage. Where can I get winter clothing in Lausanne at low prices, and what would generally be the price range in CHF?

I look forward to having a great time in Lausanne and Europe!

      ABC department store in Lausanne

by montrealsky Online Now Oct 20, 2007 at 6:57 PM

      Hello,

7 yrs ago, we lived for aprox. 6 months in Lausanne.

I remember a department store, not very fancy, named ABC in the centre-ville.

I still have some of the merchandise we bought there in very good quality, despite all the wear-and-tear ...

As we plan to visit Lausanne next summer, could anyone please let me know if that store still exists, and if so, provide me with a link ...

      Many thanks in advance,
      Alina

    • Swiss Pass, Tell Pass or Individual Tickets?

by cc8 Online Now Sep 13, 2007 at 8:12 AM

With so many transportation options available, I need some advice on which I should go for while in Switzerland based on this tentative plan :

      1) Land in Zurich, take train from Zurich to Lausanne.
      2) Stay in Lausanne for 3 days, visit nearby areas such as Ouchy, Olympic museum, Musée de l'Elysée, St. Francois, Cathedral or possibly further to Chateau de Chillion, Cully and Nyon
      3) Train from Lausanne to Interlaken (Stay 4 nites), visit areas around Interlaken and Lucerne
      4) Train from Interlaken to Zurich for return flight back to Malaysia

Based on this, should I go for the 8 day Swiss Pass, or Tell Pass, or just buy individual tickets? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

    • Which area to stay in after Lausanne if flying off from Zurich?

by cc8 Online Now Sep 7, 2007 at 6:43 AM

We will be staying in Lausanne for about 3 days, then have another 3 days in Switzerland before flying off to Malaysia from Zurich. Would it be better to stay on in Lausanne and travel to other parts by train over the 3 days, or move to another area (nearer Zurich) for the last 3 days?

Which area would one recommend? Lucerne, Interlaken are some areas that we are considering, or even Zurich itself.
