Hi all, I was just hoping I could get some advice for my first trip to Vegas :) We are staying at the mirage and I was looking at some of the things they offer, one of which is a 'dolphin trainer for a day' package which sounds amazing! Swimming with dolphins is something I have always wanted to do, and you get photos with them and everything. However, I'm just not sure if it will take toomuch time out of my Vegas experience. Our basic itinerary is: July 7th- drive from LA to Vegas early in the morning, arrive about midday 8th- full day in Vegas 9th- grand canyon tour (most likely an 8hr helicopter/bus tour to south rim) 10th- fly to San Fran at 11am So as you can see, not a LOT of time. The dolphin trainer thing goes from 9-4 so it takes most of a day. I'm not a big gambler so I don't know if there is a lot I would miss out on doing during the day? Has anyone done the dolphin training and knows if it's worth doing? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)
Swimming with the dolphins is only a couple of hours. But to be honest I would not do this in Vegas since there are so many things to do beyond this activity to keep you busy.

i have been to las vegas a zillion times and have never seen this promoted--am thinking it would probably better to do this in a beach locale. things to do in vegas--the awesome cirque du soleil shows; shop--love cesar's forum shops; eat/drink--eating at buchon at the venetian is awesome; drinks at sea horse longe at ceasar's; people watch;go to spa's--love canyon ranch at the venetian.

I'm in Las Vegas quite often and about the only thing I plan for is dinner at Pamplemousse as it has been a great dining destination for the past 30 years. Depending on traffic out of LA you're looking at 4-6 hours drive. I've not heard of the Dolphin Experience package as a promotion. I have had the opportunity to swim with them in open ocean in Tahiti and the Sea of Cortez where I live part time but in captivity I would be doubtful of "the experience." I'd recommend Sundance Helicopters for your canyon experience. I've used them before and found them to be quite professional and providing an excellent trip experience. My pilot noted the camera equipment I was carrying and offered me the 2nd seat when the light was best for good photos.

Hi! I really would miss the chance to wonder, at your leisure, in and out of the hotels/casinos. You don't have to gamble to walk around. You'll find all of the hotels have their own unique qualities/experiences (that are free), for example, the MGM Grand has a Lion habitat, the Flamingo has Flamingo's and also the Jimmy Buffet casino attached on which is decorated like the beach and is attached at the other end to Jimmy Buffets bar/restaurant, Planet Hollywood has a big shopping mall as does the Venetian (I would certainly recommend the Venetian for the experience-you could actually be in Venice!!). The Bellagio has amazing art throughout the hotel and shopping area (this is a place to shop if you're loaded!!). The Luxor is worth a look around as the theme is Egypt and the hotel is actually in the shape of a pyramid and has a HUGE sphinx outside at the main entrance! Now these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Don't miss out on the free shows along the strip-the Bellagio fountains are a must see, the Sirens of TI at treasure island is good, the Mirage has an exploding volcano and I havn't even talked about 'Down town'!!! Have a great time in Vegas! I LOVE the place!! Hayley :)

Thanks heaps for the feedback :) so the consensus seems to be that I'm better off spending the time exploring Vegas and thanks hayley for the ideas too! I just wasn't sure if there was much to see during the day or if it was more a night place so that's been a great help thanks. And thanks for the reference to sundance helicopters, we have been looking at a few and that one did stand out. Cheers

Just a note about Lake Tahoe-this is on the other side of the State of Nevada. I think you mean Lake Mead.

Lake Tahoe is possible but it makes for an incredibly long and tiring day.

If you're looking for some cheapy shows that pack a good punch, I would recommend VEGAS! the Show (very classic Vegas glitz and glam) and V The Ultimate Variety Show. You can get both at http://www.vtheaterboxoffice.com/. They're not very expensive (especially compared to Cirque shows), and you can always find good deals and coupons online for their shows.
