Following on from my Grand Canyon advice question from last night

by Steven63 Online Now May 22, 2012 at 10:44 AM

Hello from Sunny Scotland-a balmy 24c here today !! The idea of the helicopter ride appeals to us though I heard at work today that the plane/helicopter rides can be quite bouncy due to air currents. Can anyone confirm this to be the case ?

Depends on what you consider to be bouncy and how far the flight is. I did the helicopter flight from the rim to the canyon floor (and back) - with a river raft trip at the bottom. You definitely feel a 'bounce' when you go over the edge due to change in air pressure/current, but I wouldn't say the whole trip is bouncy. I can't, of course, comment on anything longer like a full canyon flight. Have a great trip!

Hello! Yes, you do feel a change when you fly over the rim, but hey! How cool is that! Knowing that you are flighing over the Grand Canyon! There's nothing inbetween the helicopter you're in and the Canyon floor! I found it exhilarating! One of our party was absolutely petrified of heights (I won't repeat what he said all the way down!!), but he enjoyed the overall experience - he personally won't repeat it due to his fear, but he's glad he's done it. My advice would be 'go for it', it's an oportunity of a life time - enjoy! Hayley :)

If you fly in the early morning you're less likely to have a bouncy ride, as the air is at it's calmest that time of day.

All depends on the air temperature and winds on the day of the flight. I've had very smooth flights to/from and into the canyon from Las Vegas. Also a time of turbulance. Just like air sheer in a plane it all depends on the weather. If you get a calm day about the only thing you might feel is a bit of air temperature change at the edge of the canyon and depending on how it's approached you won't feel that.

My Sister and I did a helicopter trip from the South Rim and it was wonderful. It wasn't at all bumpy, in fact I thought it smoother than a bus. It's well worth doing. An experience of a lifetime.
