Ah...the Golden Nugget may have changed in the last couple years since I've been to Las Vegas, but given the two options I'd stay at the MGM.

There is plenty to do in LV in all areas. The MGM has NYNY, Excalibur, Luxor, etc nearby along with heaps of other things. That would be my choice. We have stayed at NYNY and Excalibur and been happy with both but prob prefer Excalibur. We have never had a car in Las Vegas but it would be handy for trips out of this city but the thought of having on in the city especially on the trip would not be my idea of fun. The traffic is pretty heavy in the main area and I would imagine parking tricky and expensive. There are bus runs up and down the strip and monorails. Have a great trip. I am no expert but feel free to contact me if you have other questions.

Golden Nugget is old LV strip and fun if you want to experience what it was like before "brass and glass." Golden Nugget is fun because it is close to the Fremont Street experience, which is fun in the PM after you have been running around all day and just want to kick back, drink, and not worry about driving. However, it is not in the heart of the new strip and you will not want to walk from there to the strip. However taxi's are cheap and plentiful. You could use the mono rail but I have not so can't speak about it.

There's been mention of parking and expense. Most all hotels have free self parking. MGM is no exception. Driving on The Strip during peak times is slow but faster than the bus. Bus transport on a good day is faster than walking but not by much in my experience unless you're going a good distance (I once missed outwalking the bus up Flamingo by 1 block in a 2 mile walk.) the "mono rail" is expensive and not very convenient but check out their web site http://www.lvmonorail.com/ride/map/ . The 3-day pass for28 is probably the best deal. There is also a second that is free from Excalibur to Luxor to Mandalay Bay. At the end of "the monorail" at the Sahara stop, there's a fantastic restaurant called Pamplemousse at 400 E. Sahara. Driving around, depending on your likes/dislikes, Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire and of course Hoover Dam are great scenic venues.

Another vote for MGM from me. Assuming parking is free at the strip hotels you still have the grief of getting to and from the car park. We ended up not bothering with the car and using taxi, bus, monorail. It takes so long to/from your car in some places. My suggestion use your car to travel to/from Golden Nugget area.

Hi there we have just come back from staying at the signature suites at the MGM grand. MGM grand is definitely more in the centre of what is now the strip (even though its not the original strip area)More central hotels (10-15 mins walk from MGM are the aria, cosmopolitan(very new and nice)paris paris bellagio, caesars etc. Also it can take 10-15mins to walk from one side of MGM to the other its that big. Golden Nugget has the fremont street area but we saw little else and we were advised not to walk too far outside the fremont street area late at night (its absolutely fine in the fremont street area and very busy). Fremont street is about 20 dollars in a taxi from the MGM and is more than worth the money, it really is a great experience as well as being cheaper to drink eat and gamble than the new strip area with MGM,new york new york, paris paris, bellagio etc. My advice would be stay central depending on your budget as there is a lot more to see if your short on time walking is easiest around the main strip but take comfy shoes there is a lot of walking and the streets can be very busy!! Stratosphere is worth visiting for the views and the rides that are at the top of it or its16 pp to go up to the 2 viewing areas, to get there we got the monorail12 for a day pass which went from MGM to the sahara and then a 5 minute walk to the stratosphere again the walk was ok but slightly rough to be doing late nights. We have just come back from 5 nights so any more info you need please ask! and most of all enjoy it really is an unbelievable place.

MGM hands-down from my perspective. Although I've had some fun down around the Fremont area, it's very small arera that is set away from what most people today consider 'Vegas'.
