Life in Lapu-Lapu City.

by johnantmr Online Now Apr 26, 2005 at 6:26 AM

Hello Folks,
Can anyone tell me what life is like in Lapu-Lapu?
I am interested in all aspects of life there.
Population, crime, weather, entertainment etc.
How crowded is the place?
Does it rain every day in the wet season?
Does it rain all day when it rains?
What are the beaches like?
Is it still possible to get away from the crowds to enjoy the flora and fauna of the area?
Are,(well behaved,)foreigeners welcome as immigrants?
Any comments would be welcome.
Thank you,
John.

this place is in the island of mactan where the international airport is.

in my frequent sojourns to the place since 1992 (latest was 2nd week of april), i have never considered lapu-lapu as "crowded". you have got to cross either of the two bridges to Mandaue City and onwards to Cebu City for that! i even wonder why Lapu-lapu is a city! probably because of its income from the many hotels and resorts. despite them many hotels and resorts, people do not seem to be flocking to permanently settle in the island - probably because most of it is already owned. i can assure you though there are still a lot of farmlands in the area (if only to prove it is not crowded)!

during the wet season, you could experience a week of continuous rains when there are storms (seldom in that area to rain a complete 24-hour shift!). but the rains do not usually dampen anything. you can still go on just about anything you want to do even if its raining.

the island of mactan is still a fine place to roam and appreciate flora and fauna. crossing to some little islands for diving and snorkeling is even more exciting.

migrant foreigners do not seem to matter differently to anyone there. but misbehavin dudes (filipino or not) are promptly dealt with by the local authorities. don't be surprised that many of the resort/hotel/restaurant/business owners in the area are foreigners. some even own bike-shops, dive-centers, etc., Am not sure if he is still the mayor now but i happen to have seen their mayor sometime ago and his surname is "Weige" - whose roots are foreigners who settled in the place years ago!

nightlife is plain but theres a scattering of videoke bars everywhere. there are high-end hotels like shangri-la mactan and waterfront mactan which is just a spit accross the airport. this latter 5-star hotel has a casino frequented by plane-loads of players from japan and malaysia! have not checked if its still operational but i have tried staying at delta-philippine-dream (a japanese ship converted to a hotel) and there is a casino and a fine videoke bar with lovely GROs!

    its a fine pick!
