Looking for Nietzsche in Saxony-Anhalt/Leipzig

by finaldest Online Now Apr 10, 2006 at 7:19 AM

Dear travellers,

I would like to visit the birthplace of Friedrich Nietzsche - a town called Roecken and also Naumburg, where he spent the most part of his life.

A friend and I plan to take a train from Duesseldorf to Leipzig. Does anyone know of a good train or bus connection to Roecken and Naumburg from Leipzig? Would it make more sense to rent a car in Leipzig?

I would like to visit:

1. The village church and cemetery in Roecken
2. Das Nietzsche-Haus, Weingarten 18, Naumburg
3. Museums, cafes, bars, restaurants etc. in Leipzig (suggestions from the local tourist office)

Any other "must-see"s whilst we are in these three cities - Leipzig, Roecken and Naumburg?

Many thanks,
Srik

Naumburg is well connected by trains and all trains, even the ICEs, stop there.
Röcken (170 inhabitants) is only connected by bus and this not really frequent.

Here a page with some pics from Röcken and maps.

The railway line on one map showing a stop at Röcken is no more.

Most important sight is the cathedral with the life-sized figures depicting the twelve founders of the cathedral.

I don't know how often you get back to this part of Germany but Quedlinburg is a fantastic World Heritage town. Takes around 2 hrs to get there by train from Naumburg though - not sure about driving times.

Wow - thanks for the tip! Quedlinburg seems to be v interesting. Think we'll try to do Duesseldorf - Leipzig - Roecken - Naumburg - Quedlinburg - Leipzig - Nuernburg - Duesseldorf.

    Hope it works out!

    Cheers,
    Srik

Did you take your trip? We went to Roecken from Naumburg. We stayed at the motel by the train station, we walked up to the town, we stayed 2 xtra days we liked it so well. We took a train to Weissenfells and a bus to Roecken. It was a short visit due to the timing of the bus/train conection, but it was enough time to see it all. They do not get many visitors in Roecken, there is one "bar". They treat you very nice. We had to get the info from the visitors center in naumburg. The site for Roecken they gave you is a excellent representation of what you will see.
