      Bocholt Feb 11, 2014 at 12:28 PM

We have been told that we need to have winter tyres on our Belgian hire car to drive into Germany to see friends in Bocholt. We wondered about driving through Holland and catching a train to Bocholt instead. Does anyone know if there is a train from a local Dutch town which will take us to Bocholt? Thank you.

      Hello all
Has anyone visited the Technical Museum in Bad Oeynhausen recently? I saw on a couple of websites that it is currently closed. I'm hoping this is just a seasonal thing! I won't be visiting until April or May so maybe it will be open again by then.... hopefully :)

      Airport stop over

      Dortmund Jan 27, 2014 at 8:46 AM

My wife and I have a 5 hour (+ 2 hours for check-in) airport stop over on February 14. Can anyone recommend us a restaurant in central Dortmund for a relaxing lunch?

Also, is there a left luggage office at the airport to store our case? And, we will need to be back at the airport for around 18:15 - how long should we allow for a shuttlebus journey at this time in the evening

    • Invited Guests?

      Bonn Jan 3, 2014 at 7:38 AM

I am witing to seek advice regarding a proposed visit to Germany.

My wife has been researching and and writing a scholarly biography of a WWII German fighter pilot who later became the initial postwar Director of Personnel for the reconstituted German Air Force (with the apparent approval of the US). My wife has corresponded with this person's son (and other relatives) and obtained some information and impressions for her biography.

Last year the son and his wife invited us to visit and stay with them in their home in Germany. We thought they were merely being polite. We thanked them for their offer and said that because of our jobs and finances we could not visit until at least 2014. The son has just recently corresponded again and reiterated the offer saying we promised to visit in 2014.

They are quite formal as they are both members of the aristocracy and he is a retired federal justice on what I will call the German Supreme Court for Patent and Trademark matters. We think we will be in a position to accept the offer and would like to go. While we have been to Germany and Austria a couple of times in the past, we have never been anyone's house guests. My wife reads and writes German and can speak the language fairly well. However, I only know a few phrases.

Do you think they are just being polite or is the offer genuine? Should be go and stay in a hotel or is that impolite given their offer? Additionally, are there any cultural things we should be aware of if we do visit as their houseguests? Are there any do's and don'ts we should know about?

We stayed in beautiful Monschau in July this year and went to a local puzzle shop where we purchased some puzzles. Can someone please give me the email address of the shop so that I can obtain instruction replacements.

Hi, me and my two kiddies, 10 years and 6 years, are going to Germany for 2 weeks this coming December. We have accommodation so we don't have to spend any money for that. What I am unsure of is how much money will me and my 2 little ones need to survive for 2 weeks in the most economical way?

Air Berlin for International Flights Between US and Germany

Was somewhat surprised to see how cheap air fares are on Air Berlin from California to Dusseldorf As a One Alliance Member I can fly cashing in my AA miles to Salzburg for less than $100 for two people. Any thoughts on using this airline for international flights? Thanks for the help.

      Silvester in Dortmund

      Dortmund Nov 20, 2013 at 12:57 AM

I'll be spending New Year's Eve in Germany and was planning to go to Dortmund. Are there any nice places to spend it? Clubs? Hotels? Also is it possible to travel back home to a nearby town early morning? How does the public transport run on that day? Is it better to maybe book a room in Dortmund itself?

I also thought that maybe other towns will be better than Dortmund, like Düsseldorf. I have read many Silvester offers online with party tickets ranging from 80-400 €. Should i get one of these or just go on the day?

Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you! :)
