We will be in Basel in 2 weeks and plan to visit at least 1 German castle near Basel. I chose a day trip to Hohenzollern castle based on pictures, description and the proximity from Basel. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hohenz... What is your experience about this castle? It's near Hechingen. What other places do you recommend on the way to/from Basel. We have a rental car. Thanks.
Hohenzollern is a 19th century palace based on the foundations of a medieval castle, not much is left of the original. So don't expect to see a real medieval castle.

Hohenzollern Castle is 19th century Romanticism replacing an old castle ruin. Another branch of the Hohenzollern family is still residing in Sigmaringen Castle. From the interior one of the most interesting castles to visit. Has e.g. Europe's biggest armory. http://schloss-sigmaringen.de/ Don't forget to drive to Sigmaringen via Tuttlingen, i.e. through the Upper Danube Valley en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upper_... Which has plenty of more castles and castle ruins. E.g. Wildenstein Castle (used as a youth hostel) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_W... Also worth a stopover is the Abbey Beuron in this valley. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beuron... And if you travel from Basel along the Rhine via Waldshut-Tiengen you can also include the Wutachtalbahn (pigtail railway). Nowadays a museum railway this line was once built to bypass Switzerland (the main train line crosses the border a few times) in war times. stadt-blumberg.de/ceasy/modu...

Thanks for your replies. This is what we may do. Basel to Hohenzollern Castle( Hechingen) via Frieburg and Titisee Neustadt. We will continue to Lichtenstein Castle. Then on the way back stop at Rhine Falls - Schaffhausen and then back to Basel. According to Google maps, the total driving time is about 6 hours. That will give us 5 hours at all the sites.

The best thing about Hohenzollern castle is the fantastic view as it is sitting on a lonesome butte in the middle of the landscape. My favourite place nearby is the township of Haigerloch - due to its spectacular setting in the Eyach valley, built on two hills (castle, castle church, etc.) and the "Atomkellermuseum" in the valley. In the Atomkeller, the beer cellar of a pub, German scientists tried to split the atom during late WW2 when they had to leave Berlin. The Americans deconstructed the site, the museum tells the story. Haigerloch is about 20 km west of Hechingen. haigerloch.de/ceasy/modules/... Another highlight is the city of Rottweil which is Baden-Württemberg's oldest township and well and truly beautiful. It is about 40 km south-west of Hechingen. http://www.stadt-rottweil.com/rundgang/ Near the Rhein Falls near Schaffhausen you could visit a sensational Swiss town named Stein am Rhein - far more spectacular than their website ;-) steinamrhein.ch/xml_1/intern... Do not miss to go on a boat tour at the Rhine Falls! However, this would be a lot to see and do, adding the other suggested places - but absolutely doable.
