First time in Maui and can't drive, advice on activities please

by babesally Online Now May 14, 2007 at 4:30 AM

Dear All

I am planning a 4-day holiday on Maui, during one of the days we will visit the BI by taking a day tour.

we are two women traveling and both can't drive. I am not sure Maui has much public transport. How can we get around places on Maui without a car? Or it is impossible?

For the rest of the 3 days we would like to spend on exploring Maui, is there any good local tour comapnies?

Could you also advice us where is a good place to stay, i.e. close to the beach and covinient for travel to the ferry and main attractions of Maui.

Many thanks

Sally

You will probably want to stay on Kaanapali Beach. Maui is mostly about the beaches and this is one of the worlds best. You can walk to several great places to eat and people watch. Most hotels have shuttles and there is a free shuttle that will take you into downtown Lahiana. You can also take bay cruises directly off the beach.

If you haven't booked your flight to Maui take a look at flying into Kapalua (JHM) airport rather than the main (OGG). JHM is only a few minutes from Kaanapali beach and is so small they don't open the ticket counter or security check in until about 45 minutes before your flight. You can clear security in five minutes.

Bad thing is there are no direct mainland flights to JHM so you have to change planes in Honolulu and go to/from the interisland terminal from/to the international terminal. They will transfer your bags but you have to clear security again. Going to the interisland only takes a few minutes. Going into the international can take a bit long, but still not that bad.

Since you don't drive you will find it better to fly into JHM if you decide to stay on the Kaanapali beach area.

Maui does have a public bus system that you can take. No surf boards allowed though.

Maui bus system for those who can't drive

For only 4 days, you may not want to stray too far from where you choose
to stay. If you stay in either south or west Maui, you will be within walking distance of many options for shopping, restaurants, and activites. South Kihei has more beaches that are easily accessible, can stroll from one to another. There are also bicycle rentals. Taxis are very expensive on Maui.

Find a hotel that does have some sort of shuttle service from airport; or use the Speedi Shuttle; they also use bio-diesel so may be a more green alternative. You can book airport pick up to and from in advance.

There is also a bus system, and it does have regular service to some parts of the island ... check the schedule and esp. the last bus of the day very carefully.

"Public Transit Bus Schedule: Commencing July 1, 2007, the Maui Bus public transit service consist of eleven (11) bus routes, all operated by Roberts Hawaii. These routes are funded by the County of Maui and provide service in and between various Central, South, West, Haiku, and Upcountry Maui communities. All of the routes are operated seven days a week, including all holidays. No transfers are given on any of the routes.

Airport Access - The Upcountry and Haiku Islander routes stop at the Kahului Airport. See the Maui Bus schedule for departure times and rules for luggage restrictions. To view the Public Transit Bus schedule, go to mauicounty.gov/bus/busschedu...

Good luck and have fun !!!
