Things to see and places to eat around Lago Garda

by berkowitzmel Online Now Sep 3, 2004 at 11:34 PM

We are going to be travelling with 3 older children the Lago di Garda area and staying in Sirmione at the beginning of October for two days. We would love any recommendations of what to see and do, and recommendations of where to eat.

I stayed in Malcesine and found the pizza place on the main piazza to be really good. I also enjoyed sitting down at Bella Vista in Salo and watching the world go by. There's also a delightful little piazza through a laneway to the north that had a cafe I felt would have been nice also. Hotel Malcesine, where I stayed, had great breakfasts but I never had dinner there. Malcesine also has a castle and a great cable car (it revolves as it goes up) with sensational views at the top. Decenzano I found to be a really good town to walk around and the same for Salo. Shopping for the ladies would be an option in these two towns. Catching the ferry would be a great way to get to either of these towns as distinct from driving. The northern part of the lake is much more scenic than the southern. I would wholly recommend that you spend a day in Trento if you have the time. Vastly underrated town as it's off the main tourist agendas. For more details you can check out my pages. Cheers, Ian

We stayed in Desenzano for a week (next place along from Sirmione) and there were loads of places to eat there. Anywhere on the lake is beautiful and there are many ferries travelling up and down at regular intervals. Threr are a few suggestions on my travel page. Have a fantastic time in a lovely place

When you come?Car? How old are your son? You can do some trip whit the ferry, make a round trip whit the car, go to the gardaland park(miscelanus of disneyland and universal studio and six flag) near lazise, hiking in the montains, take the gondola from malcesine to top of monte baldo, make a day trip to verona and venice, go to the spas of sirmione. For eat i have some, good pizzeria in old town of sirmione. For something special go to ca de l'ebreo nearly verona is about 20km from sirmione,or trattoria bella vista in san giorgio in salici(is in the back of the main road from sirmione to verona) from there you can do the wine road of bianco di custoza

We are arriving by car from Milano and have two days in the area before we move onto Venezia. Our son is 12 years old and hates shopping with his sisters. (18 and 16). Is Gardaland open Sept. 29- Oct.1? The internet advertisment indicated that it will be closed during the time we are visiting. At any rate, we would prefer to explore the towns, castles and sites in the area. Thank you for your reply! Best wishes, Melanie

If you come from milan whit the car, you can do like that: go out on the highway in brescia est follow the sign to salo and go up on the west side of the lake, visit gardone and the vittoriale house famous poet gabriele d'annunzio,go limone, riva del garda(where i live) go torbole-malcesine(the gondola)-torri del benaco-garda-bardolino-lazise-gardaland-peschiera-sirmione-desenzano-back on highway to venice. For the best pizza i sugest in torbole pizzeria al porto in the main sqare of the village, in salo osteria del orologio, in brescia est after 2km of the exit is a gasoline station of AGIP 300 meters after go out and on your right you see a small house there is a osteria dell'orbo, is a good place to eat and not expensive, in limone for pizza" pizzeria al torcol", for pasta go to "spaghetteria mery" (ask for marcela).IN riva del garda go to "trattoria la montanara".For more help give a message.
