Is there public transportation to the Carrara Marble fields? If so, how do we connect with transportation? We would prefer not to rent a car to do the Marble fields and tours seem very expensive. Please advise.
I have answered a similar question relating to travel from Pisa. I'll copy some of it here.
You can take the train from La Sp to Carrara-Avenza, but the station is not in Carrara itself.
Train times, details and fares in English on that link.
You will find information about visiting the quarry on its website:
where there is also a contact email for more information and, possibly, for a tour of the working part of the quarry.
I think you will need a car to access the other parts of the quarry itself....I don't think they are easily walkable.
I had trouble finding a suitable bus service from the station at Carrara-Avenza...you may find something here:
http://www.atnsrl.it/orari.php?idzona=1 for timetables from/to Carrara
http://www.atnsrl.it/orari.php?idzona=3 for 'extra-urban' bus times serving Carrara.
I suspect you will need a car or an organised tour of some sort to visit the quarry properly.
