Porto Venere

Arriving in La Spezia by train, how can one go to Porto Venere by boat. Where do we take the ferry boat and how to go there from train station of La Spezia ? Or if no boat, where do we have to take the bus to Porto Venere from train station ? Last time, I walked a long way to the port to find out that they did not run any after waiting for 2 hours and had to walk back to town to take a bus. It was very confusing and lost 3 hours before reaching Porto Venere. Thanks.
