Bus transfer from port to centre

by jossyh20 Online Now Jun 19, 2012 at 4:10 AM

I will be arriving in the port of La Rochelle on a P&O cruise ship in 2 weeks time. I am keen to see the town as an independent traveller but how do I get to the city centre? Thank you

As far as I can make out a shuttle service to the town center is organized whenever a cruise ship docks.

If you want to use the local bus, then have a look at http://www.rtcr.fr/ct_79__BUS.html. "yelo" are the local company. You want to get off at Place de Verdun, so from La Pallice it looks like you want line 1.

We used the bus a bit for a visit two weeks ago. They are excellent and frequent. You just buy your ticket from the driver, then validate it in the machine next to him.

If you want to see what Place de Verdun looks like, you can see it on Google Street View.

@gwened: I think it's more than 500 meters... Only small ships can come close to the old town.
Big ships dock in the outer harbor, and from there it's more like 5 km. In fact, according to the port's website cruise ships dock at the "mole d'escale", which the map shows as being the outermost warf, and quite a walk from the nearest habitation, let alone the town center...

Yes - the cruise terminal is at La Rochelle-Pallice. One of our sons waa there recently - they took a shuttle bus from the quay into the centre of the old town. I can't remember whether they said it was free or just not expensive - it took about 30 minutes.
The cruise ship they were on did not give passengers going ashore independently street maps, but they got off the bus near the tourist office and picked one up there.
