Yes, January is the peak rainy season for Bali. Still, it usually only rains in the late afternoon and not for too long. It helps to keep the temperatures down. Plus, you can get the best rates during this time.

Well, that time of year is peak-season for places further north like Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc. Of course peak-season also means peak-prices. I think Bali can still a good option in January, but it depends on what you are hoping to do there. It's not a good time for water sports or diving, due to the choppy seas during monsoon season, and if all you intend to do is lay on the beach all day then you may be disappointed as well. But all the beautiful nature and culture of Bali will still be there for you to enjoy. My wife went there in mid-February, and although it rained some, she still had a great time.

You will find rainy season won't affect your stay in Bali. Many people go to Bali in January time and time again. I prefer rainy season as it cools everything off and usually only rains in the late afternoon or overnight. The drainage on the roads have all been fixed up to cope with the heavy rains.
