Hi! I plan to Visit KL in the middle of September, and I have some questions for you :) 1. I want to buy new laptop or netbook and, may be, NAS (Network Access Storage) in KL. Could you, please, recommend me any tradecenter with good choice of computer equipment and with reasonable prices. 2. Is in Malaysia VAT refund for tourists? 3. In what period is Ramadan in this year? What is peculiarity for tourists in this period? May be there are different working hours in restorants, tradecenters, shops, museums etc.? 4. I've heared, that in September in KL will be festival. What is it? Thank you in advice!! :)
Hi, Plenty of choice of computers etc at Low Yat plaza in Bukit Bintang. Remember to use your haggling skills, discounts as well as freebies are the norm. Yes, I believe VAT refund is available at the airport, not sure how much the purchase has to be. Ramadan starts next week, you won't find any difference unless you want to eat at a local restaurant outside of the city, these places tend to open up only at the evening. Not sure about any festival in September, apart from the end of Ramadan. Enjoy Malaysia - I do!

Take a look at 1. mycen.com.my/malaysia/pc.htm... Check your local prices and then compare when you are in KL 2. There is no VAT charged in Malaysia so there will be no refund :) There is sales tax charged but its not refundable for tourists. 3. Ramadan is starting from next week (11th August) and you wont find any difficulty, working hours are almost same as normal. 4. I think there is Shopping festival (ending on 10th or 11th September) but I am not sure about that. 10th and 11th September will be Eid Celebrations marking the end of Ramadan, during that period you may find difficult to get the taxi or encounter crowded intercity buses, most peoples who work in KL go to respective home towns.

Ramadan starts 12 August this year and lasts a month. The big celebration in Malaysia, is Eid, more commonly known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Hari Raya Idul Fitri or Hari Raya Puasa and colletively known as Lebaran. It is one of the biggest holidays in Malaysia celebrated at the end of Ramadan for about three days.

1. Yes, Low Yat Plaza is well known for sale of computers, mobile phones and cameras. Shop around before you decide. It pays to do your homework and have your haggling skills ready. 2. There is no VAT in Malaysia (yet!) so there are no refunds. 3. Ramadan is the fasting period for Muslims (this year expected to be 11th August to 9th September 2010, plus minus 1 day). This is where Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. You will find lots of interesting food stalls along road sides and pre designated places in the mid afternoon selling "breaking fast" foods. You will find many non Muslims joining the crowd to buy the delicacies as well. Generally business is as usual everywhere else except for the more rural area where they may close shop earlier to prepare to break fast. 4. Hari Raya Aidilfitri is celebrated thereafter (September 10th and 11th) and in Malaysia there are "open houses" where we visit our Muslim relatives and friends to celebrate the occasion. Food and drinks are in abundance. The Prime Minister and local Muslim VIPs normally have open houses which the public are invited to join. You should be able to find out the times of these open houses in the local press. Who knows, you may get to shake our PM's hand. 5. This year September 16th, we will also be celebrating Malaysia Day for the first time. Malaya gained independence from the British on 31st August 1957 but the states of Sarawak & Sabah joined Malaya to form Malaysia on 16th September 1963. By the way National (or Independence) Day is still celebrated on 31st August each year. Hope you have an enjoyable stay in Malaysia. Selamat Datang (welcome)!

Hi, I do apologise about my answer regarding VAT. Sales and service tax, soon to be GST, not VAT, or whatever you want to call them (it's a big money spinner for the government) is the tax on goods in Malaysia, I said I believed that a refund was possible for tourists although I didn't know what the minimum spend was. I have had refunds from Thailand and Singapore and therefore presumed that Malaysia had a similar scheme, but as I'm not a tourist in Malaysia I would not be eligible. Just goes to show, the only thing you can presume in life - is death! So carry on travelling!!!! Enjoy Malaysia - I do!
