Spending night at LCCT!!! I have spent the night there while waiting for my flight, you can either spend some time in one of the restaurants or find a seat or settle down on the floor. If you turn left when you exit the terminal you can walk by the buses that will take you to KL and eventually reach a food court where you can grab a drink and hang around for a few hours. i assume that you won't be able to check in to your hotel until late morning but if you are with your family i would choose a taxi as the fare would not be much more than bus/train tickets foor you and your family.... and yes , it is safe, no problems there.

Where ever you want to go in Malaysia with public transport the best and safe choice is to get your taxi at the airport counter. In Malaysia all our airport taxis are registered, and if anything happen, they will be called to answer.

The nearest hotel from LCCT is the Tune Hotel, walkable distance, should be quite safe as there is usually pedestrian around there at any time. However, in KL, like in any big cities, do not walk along dark alleys.
Taxi will be the safest , but get it at the airport terminal, and get a coupon.
Not safe to flag down any taxi on the street at the wee hours, definitely do not take unregistered vehicle, even if you have taken a registered taxi, and the driver may have a pretext to tell you his taxi had suddenly broken down and transfer you to another vehicle.
(read the Malaysian news about what happened to an American tourist in KL few days ago)

Tune hotel provide shuttle bus from LCCT, departure hall to Tune hotel. It is not safe to walk around there at midnight and better to have a good rest, have nice shower and feel fresh to start your journey the next morning. Oh, you only pay RM1 /person for each way.
