Private Game Reserves

by misstoscana21 Online Now Dec 23, 2011 at 7:01 PM

I'm looking to book a trip in 2012 and typically I'm a money conscious aware traveler, but also look for quality. I have been reading a lot about the private game reserves and am aware that these are really considered 5* establishments, but they seem to include everything, including pickup from the airport. What are the best ones to stay in in Kruger? If you don't recommend a private game reserve because of your experience elsewhere please tell me why and what I should consider. Thanks!

Hi As you probably know, Kruger is the National Park, and there are a whole host of private reserves on the edge of the park, but not within it. I would heartily recommend the Moholoholo Forest Camp, where we have been going each year for over a decade which is absolutely brilliant and surprisingly affordable - it also has an animal rehab centre on the property, which is very interesting. Moholo is too small to be a Big Five reserve (it has three of the five - hippo, rhino and leopard), but is only an hour from the Orpen Gate to Kruger, so you could self drive into the park during the day to see lion and elephant. Have a look on my Hoedspruit page for more details. Pickup from the airport is nice for people who want to be cosseted, but is likely to cost you dearly and also limits your flexibility. Rather consider a self drive option which you can then combine with the stunning Panorama route along the northern Drakensberg escarpment, taking in attractions such as the Blyde River Canyon, Three Rondavels, Bourke's Potholes, the historic gold rush town of Pilgrim's Rest and more waterfalls than you can shake a stick at. Regards Cathy

An alternative to a camp is to stay at one of the hotels in the Hazyview area, which is 20 minutes from Kruger. It saved us a lot of money compared to a camp, which can be very expensive. It also gave us the flexibility to do a day driving the Panorama Route, which is 90 minutes west of Hazyview, and has some of the most amazing views and scenery in South Africa, especially God's Window and the Blyde River Canyon. We spent wo days driving through Kruger, and saw plenty of animals, and one day doing the Panorama Route. Keep in mind that the best time to see animals in Kruger is in the early morning and late afternoon. It was nice to be able to go back to the hotel at midday and relax at the pool.
