Krakow - one night only

by StefEverill Online Now May 9, 2011 at 8:48 AM

Visiting family in the South of Poland and (unfortunately) will be in Krakow for one day and night only.....would anyone be able to recommend a good authentic restaurant, and then a good bar in the city centre? Many thanks, :)

Hello there. first of all, you are going to LOVE Krakow. Last year Virtual Tourist had their yearly big get-together in Krakow and we had two very special meals there, one at Kawaleria Restaurant and the other at Bohema Restaurant. Here is a link to to my restaurant tips on these two restaurants, which are just off the main city square. Just copy and paste the link and put it in your browser. Krakow Restaurant Tips by LoriPori

I agree that both of the restaurants that we ate at for Euromeet mentioned above were very good but if you are looking for something a little lower priced, more along the lines of pierogi and potato pancakes smothered in goulash, try one of these places. We ate at the one at ul. Slawkowska 17 and the one at Ul. Szpitalna 38, both were very good, the decor is a little kitschy but I thought it was part of it's charm http://www.kuchniaubabcimaliny.pl/nowa/

Try the restaurant Jama Michalika, with very nice interior, a unique mix between Gothic and Art Nouveau, and fine Polish cuisine. It's in the heart of the city centre, in Ul. Florianska 45. As for bars I liked CAMELOT Galeria-Kawaiarnia, in Ul. Sw. Tomasza, 17 That's what I wrote in my review for VT:" A very nice bar and restaurant. Warm, welcoming atmosphere and good service. Old books, pictures and paintings hang from the wall; low lights and candles on the tables create a nice atmosphere. Nice music at a reasonable volume. Perfect for an intimate conversation."

You stressed a word authentic. It makes the difference. Most of restaurants inside Palnty (former walls) and in Kazimierz are made for tourists. You can check 'Pod Baranem' ul. Gertrudy, The best authentic garden restaurant, no tourist surprisingly empty, decent and cheap food (incl. pierogi) is on Krupnicza (23?) in Muzeum Mechoffera (Cafe Wazka) ul. Krupnicza. I like (laid-back style) a bar called Club Re ul. Sw.Krzyza/Mikolajska. As many of Krakow ones it is a cellar (but also a courtyard garden). Pauza (ul.Florianska), Piekny Pies (ul.Slawkowska) -for artists-to-be- a bit pretensious for me. Interesting Alchemia at Plac Nowy is favourable by Brits. Eszeweria at ul. Jozefa (Kazimierz) is gloomy nice. Drukarnia at Podgorze at Wisla banks (2km from the center)- mainly for locals. Mentioned earlier- Loch Camelot has a folk art interior nice interior. Jama Michalika is interesting (interior) but not so popular nowadays for locals.

I've been to Jama Michalika & I can also say it's a cool place worth checking out. From what I recall, it used to be a major hang out for artists & you'll see various paintings on the walls. Their soup is sssooo good! Also, after a late night wandering Krakow, my dad & I discovered that if you go to the tower that remains of the old city hall in Rynek and take the stairway leading down underneath it there's a bar hidden there! It's got a really unique cave/dungeon-like atmosphere that's worth having a pint of Zywiecz in.
