Question about the train from Prague to Kosice

by danjherman Online Now Nov 29, 2011 at 12:15 PM

I have searched through the forums on this, but I am still a little confused. When I go to this site: cd.cz/eshop/international/se... I am not yet able to buy a train ticket for March when I intend to visit. Is this correct? Also, if I go through this website, will I be able to get both a reservation on the train and a seat reservation? I have seen some questions about that. Thank you in advance, Daniel

You can, of course, buy some tickets for some routes in Europe much further in advance than 2 months. But I think you have to understand that train travel in Europe is not the same as in the US. Buying tickets way, way in advance simply is not the norm, because it is simply not necessary. Fares do not rise as seats sell or departure nears (except for the Eurostar) and the majority of trains in the majority of countries, as noted, do not have online advance discount fares. What you pay is generally (although not always) what you would pay at the station on the day. The vast majority of European trains cannot get 'full-up'. Even if all seats are taken (which is not the norm) one can simply stand until a seat becomes available. This is another reason why booking months and months in advance is not necessary. If you follow through your potential purchase on cd.cz/eshop/international/se... you will see exactly what it is possible to reserve online, without entering any personal details.

You can buy the TICKET as much in advance as you want, but not the reservation. In good part of Europe (and Eurasia in general) the "ticket" consists of two virtual parts: - the fee which allows you to use the rails - the surcharge which allows you to use a particular seat / berth in a particular train on a particular day You can buy the first, but the second is normally 60 days in advance maximum (sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on the railway). For Czech - Slovak relation it is AFAIK 60 days. The price in Czech / Slovak relation is not very high and buying on-line discounted train tickets versus train tickets at the station few days in advance does not saves you much. The sleeper surcharge is pretty low (10 Euro) and they are rarely full. The Praha - Kosice regular price is 41.90 Euro. The potential 10 Euro for sleeper is extra to that. The train is rarely if ever full because cheap skaters use busses which cost less.
