Hi I plan to travel to Kolkata from the 9th of July 2012. Please can anyone advise me on the Monsoon season and what I may require (Besides rain protection),it is my first visit to Kolkata but second to India. As a South African I am rather excited to visit Kolkata and experience all that the city has to offer. I therefore call on any advice or suggestions that fellows travellers has to offer me.
I am also visiting Kolkota later this year and after searching the net and taking advice i have booked a few nights at CRAZY WANDERERS which is run by a guy from Bhutan who devotes part of his life to helping the poor children of the slums, by showing them ideas of how to earn a living. You will stay with him in that part of the city. The children will take you to parts of Kolkota you would never find on your own and he also organises wonderful tours. Hi Zach July is going to be VERY hot, humid, and of course, the Monsoon is well and truly arrived. Rain is heavier at night. August and September the rainfall gets heavier, especially at night. Besides rain gear, bring Wellington Boots. This is in my opinion the worst time to visit Kolkata. I have been to the city twice, and it is one of my favourite Indian cities. However, if you can tolerate the rain, possible transport disruptions, etc - then go. Make sure that you have ALL the preventive vaccinations- including Cholera protection. Wow, Lynne, useful info, i will be overnight there on 20th sept and back for 4 mights 23-27 Oct, how will the weather be then. Arrive lunchtime on 20th, fly to north lunchtime 21st, do you think i should stay at the sleeping room at the airport. Sorry Zach, to but in on your forum question.

September is full on Monsoon, but will abate around October. Its difficult to predict Monsoon patterns though. I am not sure about room at airport, as every time we have been to Kolkata we have arrived by train, and stayed in Sudder Street area. Have a good time- I love Kolkata, rain or not.

i went last year in kolkata and something may & July.i fabulous enjoying in kolkata and such a good days for my life. so i think you also enjoy in kolkata this monsoon. Thanks
