Kochi to Munnar

by Purush Online Now Jun 2, 2012 at 11:25 AM

I am travelling to Kochi this week. I want to know: 1. What are the places of interest in Kochi I will be staying only for one night? 2. What is the best way to travel to Munnar with a family of five (inc. 2 kids)? 3. Is the road to Munnar is hilly/ curvey/ sloppy ? How long does ita take to reach Munnar / Chinnakanal by a Tax ? 4. After Munnar I want to go to Trivendram but after covering a Backwater on the way, Is it possible or I need to again come back to Kochi for a BW and then go to Trivendram? Any advise will help but as soon as possible pl. Thanks in advance. Rgds

If you are interested in buildings of historical importance I would suggest you visit the synagogue in Jew Town, (I got married there in 1986) It is now a museum because all the Jews left and the community has almost died out. The spice warehouses are also very interesting.

    1. Places of interest in Kochi: Santa Cruz Basilica: Built in 1558 it has beautiful paintings on the ceiling. St. Francis Church: Built in 1503 by Portuguese Francisan Friars, this is the India's oldest European church. Vasco da Gama's tombstone is here. Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace): Built by the Portuguese in 1557. Beautiful murals from Ramayana and Mahabharata. Jew Town: The Synagogue (constructed in 1568, this is the oldest synagogue in the Commonwealth). The town is the centre of spice trade. Cherai Beach: Cherai beach is about 20 kms from Kochi. It takes about 45 minutes to reach (road leaves much to be desired). It is not too large a beach but is comfortable and the kids can enjoy themselves thoroughly. A number of resorts are available nearby. If you are planning to stay in Kochi, better to pack some food and take it along. Along the Kerala coast, you may find many more beaches and better ones but these would be more populated, more dirty, more expensive and less peaceful, eg., Kovalam. Chinese Fishing Nets: Lovely large pieces. Photos come out brilliant late in the evening. Willingdon Island: Named after Lord Willingdon. Now hqs. of the Port Trust and of the Southern Naval Command. Vypeen Island: Brilliant lighthouse at Ochanthuruth. 2. Take a vehicle. Convenient. 3. Munnar is a hill station. As I live in a hill station, I can assure you that the road will be "hilly/curvy/sloppy." 4. Go to Vembadanad Lake for your backwater cruise. It is considered to be the gateway to the backwaters of Kuttanad.
