Cologne > Koblenz is only 19 euro if you take advantage of bahn.de's saver fares, and the slower regional train is only 18.10 euro at any time, both of which are pretty reasonable imo (esp compared with UK train fares). I can't find any buses between the two locations. Perhaps anther Vt-er may be able to help...

The airport is actually called Köln / Bonn with Köln of course being the German equivalent for Cologne, and is situated south of Cologne. It is therefore unnecessary to go (north) to Colongne first, and then (south) to Koblenz. Train tickets from the airport to Koblenz will sell for EUR 16.40.

In Germany the different modes of transportation complement each other. They don't compete. Where there is a train there usually isn't a bus that does the same route. Buses serve as feeders to the trains, and the tariffs are often integrated. So the questions "is there a cheaper bus" has for countries like Germany (and many others) the answer "no". That may seem hard to believe for someone of the UK. From the airport of Köln (which as someone else already pointed out is actually shared with Bonn) you don't have to travel to Köln first to get to Koblenz. There is a direct train from the airport to Koblenz every hour (at x:51). That train costs 16.40 pp when bought locally. That is the one I would take.

Use the (direct) regional trains for this distance. reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/qu... Start: CGN Destination: Koblenz Hbf and select as means of transport "only local transport". You can buy the tickets online or on spot from the ticket machines at Cologne/Bonn Airport (CGN).

We just got back from Germany and used the trains to go everywhere for very little money. If you travel on a weekend, you can get this 40EU weekend ticket for your entire family to go anywhere you want. It's a little more for during the week, but not much. The local trains are just about as fast as the express trains and usually much less crowded, so the only issue is that you might have to change trains a few times (but not between Cologne and Koblenz, that's a direct train, we took that also). If you stay in one State, you can get a 29EU ticket for the entire family. The ticket machines at the train stations seem much more expensive than if you buy the tickets online on the DB website and get the specials. I got most of ours that way and they worked out no problem. Buses did not work out so well. I have come to the conclusion local travel is best done by car there, and long distance by train. Forget the bus.
