      JR questions for tokyo area

      Tokyo May 5, 2013 at 8:56 PM

hello: we will be staying at the New Otani Makuhari while my husband is on a business trip. Two questions: 1. how do we get from there (the JR stop is Kaihin Makuhari) to central tokyo, I guess what is the route? and 2. how do we get from the hotel to Narita? I tried looking at the JR map but it was too confusing!!! fortunately my husband knows japanese, so when we get there it won't be a problem, I just wanted to have the routes/stops noted in advance! Thanks

      Transportation Inquiry

      Kyoto Apr 21, 2013 at 1:06 AM

Hi. This is my Arashiyama itinerary:

JR Kyoto Station - JR Saga-Arashiyama Station (Arashiyama) - Sagano Scenic Railways walk? - Tenryu-ji Temple – walk? - Bamboo Groves - strongly recommended interesting walk - Saga Toriimoto Preserved Street – bus to Hankyu Arashiyama station (#28), and walk to Monkey Park – Togetsukyo Bridge walk - JR Saga-Arashiyama Station - JR Kyoto Station – Hotel

      My question:

Do we walk from Sagano Scenic Railways to Tenryu-ji Temple? Is it also a walk from Tenryu-ji Temple to Bamboo Groves? Also from Saga Toriimoto Preserved Street, we take bus #28 to Hankyu Arashiyama station and walk to Monkey Park, from Monkey Park walk again to Togetsukyo Bridge, from bridge walk again to JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, is this correct?

Also, do you recommend to ride the Sagano Scenic Railways? How much is it & is it worth it?

      Thanks!

      "Tokyo Banana"

      Tokyo Apr 25, 2013 at 3:29 AM

I'm in Tokyo Narita Airport right now, & thinking of buying back this confection called "Tokyo Banana".

Our daily temperature here in Singapore hovers at 34°C; once I'm back home, must "Tokyo Banana" be kept refrigerated, or is it safe if kept in the open for a few days ?

I ask 'cos I wanna buy for my friends to enjoy, but I'm afraid of it going bad if kept at room temperature (34°C) for 3 days b4 I see my friends. Unfortunately, everything on the box is written in Japanese, & the staff hete don't seem to understand my question.

Thanks in advance for any information.

First Time Visit to Osaka (Need help with itinerary & accommodation)

      Osaka Yesterday

Hello guys, I am going for a holiday to Osaka with my mom from November 9 until November 15 2013. We are coming from Kansai airport. We would like to do lots of sight seeings and enjoy the autumn season on the first few days of our trip so I was thinking of visiting Kyoto and Nara area first because I heard its a great place to visit there during autumn and there's lots of great historical temples. Do you think that's a good idea?? Is one or two days enough for us to get the most of Kyoto & Nara? Then after that we'll be spending most of our time in Osaka area and perhaps do some shopping, we would like to visit Universal Studio, Osaka Castle park, Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi etc. Can you guys recommend free or cheap admission of popular attractions there?

I'm having troubles of organizing our itinerary as I thought its a good idea to find a place where we can stay first. I was wondering which websites would you recommend that offers good and affordable accommodations? Lastly, which is the best transport card to get so we can easily access these places? I've heard about Kansai JR and Kansai thru passes but not sure how they work. Can I just purchase them online?

Looking forward to your feedbacks. Thanks a lot in advance! :)

      Best Transport Card?

Our plan is to go to Universal Studios for one day and another day in Himeji. The rest of our trip we'll stay around the Osaka area. Which transportation card is best for us? I have looked at ICOCA, Kansai JR and Kansai thru passes. Can someone tell me whether any of these are good for our travels? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance :)

      Tokyo May 3, 2013 at 10:02 AM

Hi, I will be travelling to Japan from 26th Jul for 10 days with my wife and a 7 yr old son. If you can pls let me know:

      (i) Is the summertime very hot ? I have read weather charts but it's difficult to gauge the actual feel just looking at the temperature. Is it very humid ? Does it also rain a lot and does that spoil your sightseeing ?

(ii) I will stay probably 5 days in Tokyo and 4 days in Kyoto and the last day back to Tokyo. I will most likely travel by Shinkasen. Do these trains allow big pieces of luggage (I mean tourist size suitcases) to be carried onboard ?

(iii) Are taxis easily available from Shinkasen stations to hotels in Kyoto ?

      Many thanks

Stuck trying to find an ATM that accepts American debit cards

      Tokyo May 4, 2013 at 3:26 PM

So I am currently staying at a hotel in Itabashi off of the train station, and am a bit stuck. I got 20,000 yen out at the airport when I arrived, but now after arriving at my hotel I realized that none of the ATMs around here accept my debit card. I tried the 2 nearest banks off of the Ikebukuro stop, but they did not accept my card either. Right now I have 4,000 yen left of my 20,000 and I am saving it for a train ticket to wherever I can get some more cash. Can someone tell me a place to go where I can get some money out? I can't even afford the train back to the airport right now. I know that my card works and is active because I have been using it at the 7-11 to buy rice balls and beer. Thanks!

Train Tickets from Osaka-Kobe and back

by magictravelers Online Now Aug 24, 2006 at 5:37 PM

OK, this is our 2nd post for our trip to Kobe on October. We are traveling to Kobe to attend a MTG PT at the International Exhibition Center in Kobe from October 20-22. We arrive to Osaka on Sunday and plan to stay there until Wenesday, when the rest of the gang arrives and we go to Kobe. In Kobe, we are looking at the Toyoko Inn Hotel which so far is the cheapest and closest to the IEH. We have 2 (more) questions: 1. What is the cost for the train from Osaka-Kobe, and the back train? 2. Any cheap, but nice hotel, hostel or guest house in Osaka? We would like to be at least close to the metro, or the center. Visiting Kobe

by xantylaol Online Now Jun 4, 2006 at 11:18 AM

Hi! I've browsed thru the most recent travelling tips for Kobe and you seem to bring up many good tips and recommendations. Because some information seems to be outdated I would like to ask some of the same questions and some new ones. I'm travelling alone. I really appreciate the time and effort you make to give me a reply! : 1. I'm arriving in Kobe in the middle of July and plan to stay for a few days. I would like to book a room that's clean and tidy, but don't need anything fancy. Preferably with an internet connection. Preferrably as central as possible and in terms of price - as good a deal as possible. Where would you recommend to stay? 2. I plan to see as much as possible while I'm there. Can you recommend a good travel agent for getting around in Kobe/Japan? I prefer to fly. What should I expect to pay? 3. I also plan to go from Kobe to Osaka and Tokyo. Which travel agent, website or airline would offer the best prices for such? Would you recommend something else that's a "must see"? 4. I love asian food - but is the native cuisine in Kobe/Japan as expensive as some people tell me? Even some japanese travellers I met said a meal of sushi costs like 100 US$ in a restaurant. That's a high average price I would say... 5. What is crime like in Kobe. Is it dangerous to wear a camera around your neck in central parts of the city - or should it be kept consealed for example? I heard it's really safe - just checking... 6. What would be your - say five - highest ranked "gotta see/do this" attractions in Kobe? Thanks a lot for any input you might have for my questions! :) Regards Chris

    • Ryogan around Sannomiya

by Nokenoi Online Now May 30, 2005 at 9:37 AM

On this website japan-guide.com/forum/querea... Someone mentioned about the ryogan around sannomiya station names "Ninomiya Ryokan". Unfortunately, they don't have any website or detail on the internet that I could find out. Anyone who know more about this ryokan please tell me. I will go to Kobe around one week to join with the conference but I have a limited budget. Please give me some suggestion about any kind of accommodation with cheap price around that place or Port island. Thank you very much for your response. Nok

      Beautiful sakura(cherry blossoms) in Kobe

by lisawu Online Now Mar 11, 2005 at 12:52 AM

Hi. I am going to visit Kobe at the end of March. I know that there are many beautiful cherry blossoms during this period of time. Would anybody tell me that where’s the best viewing spot? Moreover, is there any hot spring resort that you could enjoy the beauty of Sakura while you are having the spring? I also want to try the sushi that made by Sakura. Please give me more information about. Thank for your help.

      Coming to Kobe

by Sunnyonenc Online Now Feb 15, 2005 at 3:16 PM

Hello - My daughters and I will be coming to Kobe on March 27 , 2005 for three days. They were born there in 1961 and 1962 but we left when they were toddlers. Now they are both married and busy with children of their own. I'm excited about showing them around and hope someone in VT could help us. They were born at Kaisei International Hospital which I hope is still there. We'd also like to get recommendations on a place to stay. We'll be arriving on the Shinkansen so I thought we'd be better off staying at a hotel near the station. I have a few other questions and wonder if someone out there will respond. I sent a message to Sakura last week and have not received a response yet. Thanks in advance for your help.

    • Kawara senbei

by rsf1 Online Now May 28, 2003 at 6:59 PM

Many years ago I visited Kobe, and had my first taste of kawara senbei. According to information presented on the Kameido Sohonten web site, that company originated Kobe's most famous specialty in 1873. I wonder if there is anyone who might be able to tell me whether the kawara senbei was ever used for tsujiura senbei or omikuji senbei? Thank you for this consideration. Sincerely, Randall Frost San Francisco, USA PS. I would write to Kameido Sohonten except they did not provide an email address on the site I consulted.
