First Christmas in East Tennessee

by Sparrow79 Online Now Dec 5, 2011 at 3:35 AM

My husband and I moved to Knoxville less than a year ago from florida, so this will be our first Christmas here in east TN. My mom is also spending Christmas with us and I was wondering what are some fun holiday events in the area, great places to view lights and all the fun holiday things to do. We are looking for cheap or free things to do, as cash is tight. Thank you in advance and Merry Christmas!

I've not been to Knoxville, but would look at their newspaper, weekly magazine and the Chamber of Commerace websites to get an idea of what's going on in town. You might try this site: http://www.knoxville.org/ They even offer a free visitors guide of what's on offer. Also, I'd ask the grocery store clerks, food servers and any other locals I came in contact with, "What's going on for the Christmas season?" They should have lots of ideas to choose from.

I was there on Thanksgiving and the Celebration of Lights (at Market Square) was already set up. Lots of events seem to be going on well into January. ci.knoxville.tn.us/christmas...

There is a Christmas in the City event every year in Downtown Knoxville. It includes a parade down Gay Street. Downtown is decorated really nice. There is also a large open air ice skating rink in the Market Square area. Knoxville really tries to make the downtown area an exciting place for Christmas.
