We are planning to visit Lithuania at the end of Febrauary and are wondering if the Park is open in the winter and if it would be recommended to visit here? We were thinking of taking the bus from Kaunas and spending the night in the Klaipeda area? Having the afternoon/morning to explore the spit. Any information about this area, especially this time of year would be appreciated. Thank you!
The spit is open for visitors whole year. of cause it could be better in summer time. I was in Klaipeda one month ago and I like the Spit and the city as well. The spit is the favorite attration in my opinion, though there are other places of cause.

Well, in my opinion there are 2 big attractions in Curonian Spit (Lithuanian side): dunes and local fishermen villages. For the big dunes I don't know. If there is a snow then maybe it is not that big sense to visit dunes there, but probably there is not a snow as in Latvian seaside there are not much snow in winters. Also, if it is there very cold wind, then it could be a challenge for you to walk in dunes (it can take some 30-60 minutes on the dune). But for fishermen villages with nice fishermen houses it should be ok and actually even better in winter than summer, because in summer in Nida hordes of tourists are destroying natural look of traditional Curonian village - at least this is my opinion. Kinda the dark side of the tourism;) But another problem you could face is bad transportation. In summer it's ok if you go without your own vehicle - you can always get a hitch, but I can not imagine how hard it could be to make a trip to different places on Spit by very rare public transportation. But if you are heading just for one village Nida (or some other), for example, then it could be ok. Actually Curonian Spit is a place very different from any other I have visited, so maybe it is worth to go there even in winter if you will not visit Lithuania or Kaliningrad any other time soon... PS Maybe you should stay not in Klaipeda, but in one of villages in Curonian Spit?

Hi, from Klaipeda buss station there are not many busses, but in the morning you can get at 6:30 and 10:30 to Nida. All other busses are driving from Smiltyne - you have to get to downtown of Klaipeda and to take ferry to Smiltyne - 10 minutes. http://www.keltas.lt/en/ here you can see ferries timetable from Klaipeda to Smiltyne. In kassa of Klaipeda ferry you will get info, when busses from Smiltyne are leaving to Nida. It is not really so bad situation with transportation, even you should be ready to wait for buss a bit, so you should dress warm clothes. ussually after ferry from Klaipeda is comming to Smiltyne, there is small buss waiting for passangers and takes them to Nida for aprox. 5 euro or less. It will not be anything strange for locals, if you ask to give a lift to Nida who are driving there, if you see some car on ferry and if tehy are able to speak with you. Don't take taxies, they will take too high price for service, or just discuss beforehand, what it will cost for you. Don't sleep then in the buss, because you will drive nice road and lagoon from left side and Baltic from right side are sometimes visible ;-) if you have Sea Sick problem, take a pill, because the road is quite curvy. You have to climb to big dunes to understand the place and to walk on the beach as well. I love the beach in winter - so wild and spacy ;-) Have a nice trip and have a cap, gloves, warm sock and you will like it ;-) Aterola
