The train no longer goes to Kampala from Kisumu only in the other direction to Nairobi and from there there is another to Mombasa on the coast. I believe Ugandan Railways was bought by a South Africa company last year so there is hope that a passenger service will start up again there soon. While I was there earlier this year there was a rumour that there were plans to continue the railway north from Gulu into southern Sudan, now that would be a hell of a train ride. In April I got a matatu to the border at Busia (it did stop a lot along the way) strolled over the border and jumped in a direct matatu from there. I have got a bit about Kisumu and Kampala on my homepage. If you want train information http://www.seat61.com/Kenya.htm is probably your best bet.
