My husband and i plan to visit Kiev and Lviv in December 2012. We're Canadians, and I am ethnically Ukrainian so I'm pretty excited to see where my family came from. I can read Cyrillic but can't speak the language. I'll be working on it though.
Anyways, my perception based on what I'm reading is that local police are very corrupt and we will likely need to pay a few bribes, but the police are very obvious that they are seeking a bribe and leave you alone after getting a few bucks. I'm not hearing a lot of stories about people harassed, detained or being highly inconvenienced.
Is this accurate? If so, I think I can handle that. Any other advice? I know to keep my passport on me, obey the laws, not be an obvious foreigner. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
What's peoples feelings about the football in Ukraine?
I'm going over to Kiev for a week, but don't know what to expect with what the press have been saying. I'm sure the BBC came out with a similar program before South Africa and I cant remember hearing about any trouble.
All I wants a good time
Ill be arriving at the Borispal airport and need to get to Chernovsy. Please tell me how i can get to the bus or train from the airport.
Thank you very much
Also if you could tell about the hotel near the airport where i could stay a night if necessary. Hoping the rate would be 60-120
Myself and my friend are hoping to travel from Kiev to Sarajevo later this year.Preferably by plane.Does anybody know what is the best way to go about booking flights? Having various sorts of problems with various websites and i haven't got a word of Ukrainian. Also, does anybody know roughly how much we could expect to pay for a one-way flight? Or,would we be better off flying from Sarajevo to Kiev? Hope this question is in the correct forum.Apologies if it's not.
We are going to be in Kiev in August. Where can I purchase the Topograficheskaya
Carta 1:100,000? There are 286 of these maps in the Ukraine series.
Is there a baggage room at Kiev main station? If not, where can I store my luggage for some days?
I'll visit Ukraine during EC 2012. A crucial puzzle piece of my journey is the night train from Kiev to Lviv (and retour). In the forefield I managed to find out its schedule and it is supposed that there are several trains, for example #169 departing at 16:55, # 97 departing at 21:56, # 91 departing at 22:15 and # 07 departing at 23:58.
After managing all other problems (overpriced hotels, UEFA ticket sale, booking flights) I wanted to reserve the night train via http://www.e-kvytok.com.ua (btw: Offering an online ticket-reservation-system only in ukrainian language is an imposition in the forefield of an international mega event like the Euro 2012). But unfortunately the above mentioned train connections disappeared. Also www.poezda.net and www.oebb.com does not show any night connections any more... So what happened? Another stumbling block for football fans?
We have 3 days in Kiev in May. Which would be the most convenient location to find a hotel- close to the sites and reasonable eating places. I would love it it someone can suggest an itinerary.
I'm travelling to Kiev for Euro 2012 and I've booked a hotel in Troyeschina district. I'm just wondering if it's served by a Metro Station and whether Taxis are easy and cheap enough to get?
I don't know too much about the district, however it was cheap in comparison to the centre of Kiev.
Many thanks in advance
Can anyone help me with trying to find train times from Chisinau to Kiev?
Thanks in advance
I will be in Kyiv for a few days in early/mid december (10th - 12th or so). What are the must see sights for about 3 days there?
will be in kiev and maybe odessa last 10 days november. any suggestions about interesting things to do?
Is it possible to travel by rail to either Moldova,Romania or Belarus from Kiev? If so would you have a link for the railway website. I cant seem to find it..Also roughly how much will it cost to do this and how long is the trip ?
my friends and I are going to Kiev in Febuary for a few days. Can anybody tell me what the city centre is called and if there are any cheapish hotels or apartments that will accomodate 3 people. And how much by taxi from the airport.Thanx,Chris.
I'm planning a trip to Ukraine next year. Therefor I am trading off domestic flights versus (night) trains... Unfortunately the official site of the railroad company is in kyrrilic letters only, but I was able to check the schedules (fi @ www.oebb.at). But they do not provide any price information...
So how much the night train from Kiev to Lviv will be? Is it necessary to book in advance as recommended by some internet pages? Is there any possibility to book from abroad without consulting (expensive) agencies? Regarding their prices a night train would cost the same as going by plane, so I tend to fly (against my original tendencies)...
I will go with a friend to Kiev and is the first time, i will be there for the new year eve just for some days
Im looking for an apartment in centre, and if somebody can tell me some nice place to go in the evening
Hello my dear travel pals!
How is it possible to get to Boryspil airport from main rail station with a big luggage?I have a big luggage and im afraid that if it will be some small "marshrutka" -my bag will be refused to be taken or bribe will be needed....i need a big normal bus to get to terminal B for a resonable price...
thanks a lot!!!
Does anyone know where I can post a photo of a card my grandfather wrote out for me with his name and region of Ukraine/Kiev that he's from? I'm having trouble translating it due to handwriting/cyrillic characters transliteration.
I can make out "Ivan Ivanovic Miklooxen" as his name and Volost for Region/parish but that's about it. Also malo = small?
I will be flying to Thailand this summer, and bought the cheapest ticket I could find. So I will land in Kiev at 18.35 and the next flight isn't until 14.00 the day after. Its on a weekday.
So, my question is: with the short time I have in kiev, would you recommend just staying at the airport hotel for the night, or is it worth the while to go to the city, stay there and come back the next day?
Also, I found allmost no info on this, but does anyone know how the transportation between the airport and the city is. is it reliable? How long does it take? It would really suck to end up missing my flight to thailand...
I appreciate all advise! :)
My husband and I are Australian and have never been to the Ukraine, but both of my husband's parents (now deceased) were born there. What is the best way for us to visit Mlinov and Suchoveschina if we arrive into Kiev by air?
Hello. I'm flying into Kiev in a few days. It has been over 6 years since my last visit. (I was an international observer in the December 2004 Ukrainian Presidential election.) I have two questions: Is it possible/wise economically to buy a Sim card at the airport? (I have a GSM phone but I will arrive with no credits, so I need to get a Ukrainian Sim card and a few credits, too). Thanks, in advance, if anyone can answer this mobile phone question!
Also, I am traveling directly to Sumy, where I have friends. They say that there are marshrutkas that leave for Sumy from Boryspil Airport, BUT no one seems to know at what times they leave. My flight lands at 1:30AM, so I am prepared to wait through the night until I head to Sumy. Does anyone know anything about these Sumy marshrutkas? (I'm guessing not, but it doesn't hurt to ask :)
I am going to be in Kiev in mid-June this year. How much is a train and/or bus ride from Frankfurt to Kiev? and then from Kiev to Prague? Is it best to just find flights?
Hello again, VTers.
I emailed a couple of people who had posted VT threads that they know of or are tour guides themselves in Kiev, but has not received any response. I got the info on older posts, so I'm thinking the info may not be valid anymore.
Anyone out there who can recommend an English speaking tour guide for Saturday, 14 May?

near to which metro station?
I have been to there long time ago, I forgot the full name.
It located not far from the metro station Chernihovska, under a bridge, quite big.
In English, the spelling begin V, like V??????.
There is a Privatbank extremely close to the market.
There is a shops selling Chinese and Japanese sauce and spicy
I have several concerns that I am hoping fellow VTrs can help me with. I have read posts assuring travelers that the trains are safe. But below is part of the travel advisory I received from my company. I am an adult female traveling solo.
The 22,730km (14,207 miles) of railway track link most towns and cities within the republic and further links extend from Kiev to all other CIS member states. There are direct lines to Warsaw in Poland, Budapest in Hungary and Bucharest in Romania. Ukrainian trains are slow. Journeys can range from pleasant to terribly uncomfortable if, for instance, the heating is not switched on. Security can also be a problem, as many muggings have been reported. If travelling by overnight train, do not leave the compartment unattended. Buying tickets locally is extremely difficult and can be done almost exclusively through the black market. It is easier to pre-book through Intourist before departure. From Kiev to Moscow takes 16 hours and to St Petersburg is about 36 hours. Note: Recently, there has been an increase in the number of documented reports of criminal acts occurring on Ukrainian trains; these acts include gassings and robberies. Make sure passenger compartment doors are shut at night.
I am planning on buying the second berth in a firstclass cabin, so I can have the cabin to myself as I don't think I'll be able to sleep if I share it with a stranger. The advisory says not to leave the compartment/cabin unattended. Will I be able to lock the cabin door if and when I go to the lavatory? How rampant are robberies and gassings?
Shall I just fly? The reason I am looking at taking a night train is to have more time in Kiev since the train arrives at around 6:00 a.m. and the plane at around noon time. Also, it is more convenient to the city center (I don't have a hotel yet).
How much should I expect to pay for a taxi from the city center to the airport and vice versa?
How safe is the city for a solo female tourist?
Any direct train running from Kiev to Lviv with stop near Slavuta?
What is the nearest train stop? Shall I need to change bus after train stop?
I kindly request some info on transportation from KBP( airport ) to Kyiv and also about some hostels/budget hotels in the city. Thanks a lot.
Visiting Kiev in June and flying in to Zhuliany Airport late afternoon.
Can anyone give me some advice on how to travel from the airport to Independence Square using public transport, buses, metro etc as I have an allergy to airport taxis.
Also, can anybody tell me how close the Aviation Museum is to the airport.
Thanks in advance for any advice
I would appreciate information on booking a ride on the first electric tram in Kiev for a Canadian Choir- (goup of 28)in August/2011. I understand the original tram (1892)has been refurbished and is available for group bookings. A telephone number or an e-mail address for booking such a ride would be terrific.
