Hi, I will be visiting Kiev alone early next month ( pleasure trip ). It will be my first time in Ukraine & i am unsure of where to book accommodation. Ideally it would be close to where public transport from the Airport . The hotel doesn't have to be luxury. Around 50 euro's per night would be great. Also does anyone know best place to change my ££'s into hryvnas ? I have heard you get a poor rate at the Airport & it's difficult to get Ukranian money in the UK. Finally is everything around the city in the cyrillic alphabet. This caused me massive problems in Sofia earlier this year with the street names & it took me 4 hours to find my hotel. ( yes i now know i should have got a taxi lol ) Many thanks in advance, Darren.
Hi Darren, Don't know about Kiev, but as far as being able to move around... I visited Bulgaria for almost 3 weeks. Dealt with the problem by having a 'cheat sheet' of the Cyrillic alphabet along with me and a good map. Of course I used a Bulgarian cheat sheet, but Russian is also available. Is that what you need for the Ukraine? See here: friends-partners.org/oldfrie... Just Copy and Paste into Word. Then you can print it out to take with. Might be a good idea to cover it in plastic or to laminate it in case of rain. Also the Rough Guide books have a copy of it in the back of the book. Found it invaluable!

I was in Kiev last year and had no problem exchanging money there are several shops that do that ... also no problem using my ATM card.. we rented an apartment close to the old market excellent for walking around the city.. there was a grocery store close by down stairs in a mall... the signs of course are in their language! I am not sure now what the apartment company was I will look more and let you know but you can get something reasonable ours was 68 dollars US you should have no problem!!

Thanks both of you for your replies. That cheat sheet is very good - better than the one i have in my Thomas Cook Guide & i hadn't really considered an Apartment but on second thoughts it sounds a great idea especially as it's so cheap for somewhere so central. Thanks again girls :)

The last couple of years I always stay at the Hotel Tourist. Quite OK and not so expensive. Look at: hotel-tourist.kiev.ua/home_e... It is 10 steps away from the metro. You may want to have a look at my pages-there I also explain the bus from the airport to the train station. Last time I was there and took it was last May. Also have a look at: kbp.kiev.ua/index.php?lang=e...

I was staying at President hotel which was recommended by my co-workers. It is located in the center of the town, in few minutes’ walk from the metro station, near some of the major sightseeing. My room was spotless, breakfast quite good and had many choices. Lobby area is great place to relax. Gym and casino are also available for guests. you'll definitely enjoy staying over there
