      Waverunners on the Mekong?

      Laos May 12, 2013 at 1:08 PM

This may sound crazy - however, my friend and I live in the US where we both own Yamaha waverunners. We have been in Laos and Thailand recently and we are now interested in buying two new waverunners, in Thailand/Laos, and traveling down the Mekong River from the Golden Triangle to Mukdahon. (flexible on locations actually)

We would want to purchase the waverunners - take the trip - and then sell them back as used. We would also be looking to hire a Yamaha mechanic to try and follow along our trip with a truck with a double waverunner trailer in case we need to have repairs - or need to pull the boats out of the water. Do you know of anyone that has done this? Would it be allowed?

Not even sure where to look to find out about this.

      Thanks in advance.

      North Laos and Vietnam

      Laos Apr 24, 2013 at 10:01 PM

I'm planning a 14 - 18 days backpack trip next year and this is what it looks like:

      1. arrived at Vientiane
      2. Vientiane to Vang Vieng (VIP bus about 5 hours)
      3. Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang (minivan about 7 hours)
      4. Luang Prabang to Muang Ngoi Neua (boat around 7hours or should I go to Muang Ngoi via land transport before taking the water transport to Muang Ngoi Neua?
      5. Muang Ngoi Neua to Muang Khua (boat around 4 hours)
      6. Muang Khua to Dien Bien Phu (overnight bus?)
      7. Dien Bien Phu to Sapa (morning border bus at around 8 hours)
      8. Sapa to Hanoi (night train around 8 hours)
      9. Sapa to Hanoi (sleeper bus, travel time unsure)
      10. Hanoi and back

Can any one who has done this before especially the transportation part are they viable? Any suggestion if not?
      Thanks in advance.

Luang Prabang Jul 25, 2012 at 7:27 AM

Hello all, a friend of mine will be visiting Laos and is wondering if there is a restriction/limit on the amount of US$ that she can take into Laos. I thought there is no limit. I don't remember seeing a question about how much money one has on the enter/depart form that needs to be filled out before entering the country. Can anyone help me with this question? Thank you very much.

    • Renting apartment for a few months / visa

Luang Prabang Feb 11, 2012 at 10:06 AM

Hello I've tried to find some information on that in one of the forums but wasn't successful, so, sorry if I post anew and missed older posts. I am planning on going to Luang Prabang for 4 or 5 months and wonder if anyone can tell me about apartments that would be available for rent or maybe houses. I'm hoping to find something inexpensive, does not need to be a villa, just clean with cooking possibility, bathroom w/hot shower and internet connection, maybe TV. Staying for that long, can someone tell me if I'd have to renew my visa every month or can I get one that is valid for more than 30 days? Thank you for your feedback

Coconut Balls - Luang Prabang street food

Luang Prabang Feb 2, 2012 at 3:58 PM

We were in Luang Prabang last November. The street food is fabulous! They make some coconut balls that are fried in a special pan. I'm trying to make them at home. One person told me that they were coconut milk, sugar, and sticky rice powder (for thickening), but I have no idea what the proportions are or how to cook them. Does anyone know? I think they may also be called "canome cope" but I can't verify that. Any help with the recipe would be appreciated. Thanks. Dennis

My girlfriend and I will be needing to get from Luang Prabang to Chiang Mai at the start of January and are looking to travel by slow boat. Can anyone tell me if it is as easy to go upstream from Luang Prabang to Houay Xai/Chiang Khong as it it to go downstream from KX/CK to LP? Does it take significantly longer? I am struggling to find much info about doing the trip this way... Sames goes for buses from Chiang Khong to Chiang Mai. Any help would me much appreciated! Thanks.

Hi - anyone who has been to luang prabang - was it compulsory for you to have immunisations and what did you have to have? Did you have to show proof at the airport or border by way of certificates? What about all the mosquitoes - this sounds corny I know, but I've been reading about malaria in south asia and need to know whether there are zillions of mosquitoes as sites say. thanks in advance for your reply(ies).

Both seem to offer the same trip, overnight in the same place, Pak Bang / Pakbeng. 1 - Luang Say - Mekong River Cruise, Euro 283 2 - The Nagi of Mekong, THB.4,600 about Euro 93 To me it seems a no brainer on price but am I missing something? Hello! We are staying 4 nights during Xmas in LP, and much to our surprise have been finding everything, except really pricey places, booked! Out of desperation, I finally snagged the last room at Riverside Guest house for66USD, but it seems overpriced to us, for what they offer! Anyone know anything about that place? Or have any ideas on another place to stay in case I can cancel this reservation? Thanks for any help! Should have planned earlier I guess!

one tour op has gotten back to me and can do the tour I'd like for the I'd like to spend. The only bug is I'd like to make Elephant Park on the 4th day and depart of the 5th day. They only want to book a 4 day tour in their tour order. If I leave them on the 3rd day, went to EP on the 4th day, how would I fare either self guided or finding a local for the 5th day and cover the National Museum and Central Market?
